NE/SW relief's.

Apart from the many summer dated holiday services, another good bet for rateable haulage was the cross county relief's that were common place during the 1980s.

One relief that seamed to run quite often during the May 83-84 timetable was the 09:13 Paignton - Leeds. Here, 37284 is shown on this turn upon arrival at Derby. Running over two hours late on this occasion due to a earlier locomotive failure (Gloucester area?), the date, 4th August 1983.

31229 + 31302 arrive at Birmingham New street with the 1Z09 1041 Exeter - Edinburgh Relief on the 6th August 1985, handing over to 850??. Note that the second loco, 31302, has a full height body side grill at both ends. This unique feature is thanks to an experimental 2000 bhp power unit having been fitted to this loco during the 60s.

On the 27th of August 1985, York had the task of finding a number of additional locomotives for relief's and other duties. A motive power shortage arose which resulted in the unusual appearance of a single Class 20 locomotive on a class one passenger train. 20011 was all that could be made available to work the five coach 1V49 12:55 York - Cardiff relief. The train ran as far as Birmingham New Street, where the train was terminated.
