The pair continued in multiple, and from memory, the  rat was trying its best to help despite its near heart attack.  Somewhat down on time, I did a fill-in move to Huddersfield and back (45133 and 45125) as I was keen  to see what would be ‘chucked out’ on the return 1M26 1600 Leeds – Carlisle working.  Holbeck fitters must have worked magic as 25042 was back again as the sole power on the front of the  stock as I returned from my ‘ned’ leap.  We departed on time – how far did we get? Well less than two miles actually before the rat finally died  in Kirkstall Loop!  31195 was finally dispatched to rescue us and topped the rat as far as Skipton. At this  point, the admirable rescuing engine was detached in favour of 40158 (still topping the demic rat). I took  the combination forward as far as Settle, where I ‘settled’ (excuse the pun) on 31126 on 1E33 1635  Carlisle – Leeds to its destination.   Looking back, quite a ‘hellfire’ first day of my first ever ‘valid’ all-liner."
