Where were you?

"Just one thing on my mind today – the appearance of a pair of Tinsley vacuum-braked only 20s, just reinstated from months in store in Scotland – 20013/108 on the Leicester-Skegness Usually, as a rule, my parents were not too keen on me covering the returning Leicester train because I wouldn’t get home until midnight, although I was able to cover the Derby train and get home an hour earlier. (they had to pick me up from the station, so you can understand their stance!) But today I just had to have the Leicester train. I am not sure, 23 years, on if I ‘told a fib’ and told the folks we were running late, or if I had pleaded with them because of the enormity of the two 20s… either way, they were on my radar all day. Off school and on a Midland Railtourer, there were a few leaps to do beforehand.40104 was on the 0925 Brum-Ludo, so I did a fill in move on this before returning to Brum to see 31102 on the 1020 to Norwich. Out to Nuneaton, 31415 back. A couple of other fill-in moves, 47600 for 47530 until I got the gen that 31292 – a no heat TE machine, - was on the 1210 Cambridge-BNS, so I did 31403 out to Nuneaton to scoop the big 31. Another Birmingham International fill in move - an 85 for ‘IKB’ (47484) then off to Nottingham for the 20s via an HST to Derby. There was obviously a farce brewing as the DMU only made Beeston, but I was not too bothered as the big pair of shabby 20s were duly scratched to Leicester. A fifth 31 of the day – 31401 – took me back to Brum and then a 310 back to Tile Hill. 20108 was huge, and I think virtually everyone scored it this week. 20013/108 predictably worked for the next two days, but on the Wednesday I am told they worked the Leicester only to return on an adex to Redditch! "Moves for me on an early Midland Railtourer :
Nothing overly exciting, inparticular
the lack of 87s on the WCML would have rankled, but 31167 was welcome
near the end. At the time, I was under parental instruction to be back
in Nottingham before 9pm......!"
Richard Boyd recalls
"My moves for Bank Holiday Monday 27 August 1984. These were as follows: 47125 Manchester-York on 09.05 Liverpool-Scarborough 45148 York-Leeds on 14.00 Scarborough-Liverpool 40099 Leeds-Settle on 15.55 Leeds-Carlisle 47110 Settle-Leeds on 16.35 Carlisle-Hull 47125 Leeds-Manchester on 18.00 Scarborough-Liverpool The day started on 47125, which I'd only had new a couple of days earlier. However, as is the way, by Monday evening it felt like I'd had little else over the Pennines. Although I can't recall it, I obviously must have received some gen that required 47110 was on the S&C and therefore took the first train back to Leeds. OK, it was 45148 but no doubt I tried to put this out of my mind. Anyway, having arrived at Leeds, what I do recall was an absolute throng of bashers. Doubtless this was because of the 40 on the Carlisle-bound train. By late summer 1984, 40's were in terminal decline and pursued vigorously by all and sundry. Except me. I got off at Settle, took a few pictures of the station (since the S&C was at the time slated for closure) and eventually scratched in 47110. Home was by the omnipresent 47125. I think the thing that strikes me about writing this is the way some things stick in your mind and others don't. That I've had to guess a bit here is an indication of how long ago it happened."
