Peter White says...
"As a prelude to the day in question, my Friday finished with a
desperate leap from Newton Abbot to Paignton on 47232 with the 18.59
Pad-Paignton relief, despite the fact that it went back ECS and it was
so late it missed the last unit back up the branch, but the loco was a
winner. This meant hitching back to Newton Abbot. In the event me and a
friend were picked up by a kindly old gent who went out of his way to
take us back there...where he made tentative enquiries as to whether we
had any interest in "the Gay Scene"....."Umm, thanks for the lift, our
train is just arriving. Must dash..."

Of extra interest is the fact that 'UD' also had 47335 that day, on
1413 Portsmouth-York to Birmingham, which, assuming that it went to
Waterloo first, makes for quite an interesting diagram."
Note:  By diagram, 47335 should have started the day with 1V01 0140Waterloo - Exeter SD before working 1O04 above,
working a vans turn to Portsmouth, then heading for the Midlands on 1E13 1413 Portsmouth - York.  To finish the day
47335 would have been expected to work 1V16 1725 Manchester - Paddington from Coventry.

"25/8/84, Remember it well - a hellfire day out!

Rumours had been flying all week but it was only on the day that we would know for sure.  Started with
47150 on the 0745 Cardiff - Manchester (?) followed by 47594 on the 0805 Cardiff - Portsmouth to Bristol
for the 1015 relief to Paddington.  The tension mounted until it rolled in from Malago Vale - 37301 xot LE on
the relief - unbelievable!  A storming run ensued via Box and middle road Swindon to London.  At Padd, it was
shunt released and '301 dropped on the other end of the stock for a relief back to Swansea.......to even get a
'3' on a passenger train was hard enough, but like this....! At Swansea, the stock formed the 1720 to Cardiff
vice a DMU, so 37233 xo BR put in an appearance......incredible looking back at it now.  However, '233
wasn't very healthy / good and a mediocre run ensued to Cardiff.  Still, who cares! It looks FANTASTIC in
my moves book!"

Alan Baylis remembers...
"I'm on holiday at the start of this Saturday so it includes the overnight moves picking up from the last Crewe - Cardiff
 service on the Friday:

47094   Cardiff - Llanelli             1B78 2145 Paddington - Fishguard
47564   Llanelli - Swansea          1B03 0150 Fishguard - Paddington
50040   Swansea - Cardiff          1B03 0150 Fishguard - Paddington
25211   Cardiff - Shrewsbury     1M68 0532 Cardiff - Crewe

- this was a booked minus one onto the Aberystwyth train but often made.  It became much more than that as
it lost a minute at each stop but fortunately for me the Aber was held, much to the displeasure of the members
of the Rat Roadshow on board who had hoped I was missing!

25268/25288 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth    2J61 0744 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth
25268/25288 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury    1A26 1010 Aberystwyth - Euston

25230/25037 Machynlleth - Caersws          2K89 1400 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury

- bailing here is the timetable's Mega (most possible) Mileage move for 25's on the Aber (654.5) and I only did
it because the locos out today were regulars and therefore uninteresting.  Mark Bennett (Derby No.1, as we
called him) was with me and had decided to go home.  However the return DMU was running late and the
Rats that were normally held at the signalbox just outside the station, made it to Newtown so he got off and
returned.  I happened to open the door next to where he was sitting with an ear to ear grin!  His Aber mileage
for the day totalled 666 and was never equalled to my knowledge.

DMU     Caersws - Aberystwyth                2J23 1315 Chester - Aberystwyth

47144   Wem - Shrewsbury                        1V07 1939 Crewe - Cardiff

- quite a few of us were hoping for 25211 to appear but the train was an hour late after problems in the Crewe area

DMU     Shrewsbury - Crewe      ???? 1855 Cardiff - Crewe
85022   Crewe - Wigan               1P51 2258 Crewe - Preston

"Early days for me, but notes below shows the results of a day on a Midland Railtourer ticket. First target was
the Rats on the Aberystwyth - 85002 was a bonus. The 33 was welcome to Crewe, and then it was back to
New St for the booked 46. This was my only 46 for haulage, and of course had to be one of the preserved
ones (this also happened to me with class 27).

A failed Cravens unit at Washwood Heath delayed us badly, and prevented the planned drop back to New St
for the Peak on the Paignton - Nottingham, hence the tram and Goyle to get us to Nuneaton for 45029 & home.

What I recall about this day was heading over to Sheffield blind and then catching the first train back to Manchester to
get over to Victoria to have mega-monster 47222.  I was really anxious heading back over the Hope Valley in case
the train was delayed.  Why is it that you feel that something like that is more likely to happen just because it's important
that the train arrives on time, and you sit there at other unimportant times bored stiff?
Anyway, I made 47222 easily and as I recall the train wasn't too busy basher-wise out of Manchester but at Sheffield
there were scenes of near panic, especially as one train a lot of people were coming up on for 47222 only arrived as
the latter was sitting in the platform!  Anyway, having had a decent run from Manchester to Nottingham I then headed
for Leeds for 47125 over the Pennines to Manchester (Victoria in those days).  I can't recall whether I was going blind
for 47125 but two required 47's in a day was good news."
