Syd Young remembers...
"I had an aunt who lived at Newtonhall, just a few miles north of Durham and within earshot of the ECML. I was invited to stay with them for a few days. Here are my observations for the duration of that trip. I only managed to escape for half an hour or so on the 22nd, but made up for it on the 24th. Hull Paragon: saw 55010 (on 1A18 12:45 Hull-Kings X)
From Hull took Trans-Pennine unit to Selby Selby: saw 55016 (on 1A35 12:15 York-Kings X) From Selby took 55014 on 1L41 10:05 Kings X-York York: saw 47507; 40085; 55013 (on shed having just had a 'B' exam), 40159; 31156; 31268; 31410; 55003 (on 1V93 09:50 Edinburgh-Plymouth, to York, then 1S27 07:25 Plymouth-Edinburgh, from York), 31115; 40086; 47520; 55019 (on 1L42 12:20 Kings X-York, then 1A26 15:50 York-Kings X); 47404; 47423; 40116; 37252 From York took E43099 to Durham (I decided to photograph the Deltics leaving York rather than travel behind them) Stabled on DN: 08161; 08004; 08268; 08063; 37010" Saturday 22/03/80

"The 15.50 York-Kings Cross was worked by 47 403 (which had earlier worked north with the 12 20 KX-York). Most other northbound KX to York or Hull semi-fasts that day were Deltic, as per diagram, but the 12 20 and 15 50 ex York return "was Duff". It may be of use, 55007, 55003, 55 011, 55 016 and 55 012 worked off KX with the 0805 (Hull), 12.05 (Hull), 14.05 (York), 16.05 (York) and 17.05 (Hull) respectively on 22.3.80. There's no mention of the 10.05 KX-York and 14.11 ex York return in my notes, but a week earlier, (15.3.80) I note it was formed by an HST set and I bet that was the case on March 22nd (It was: See Trevor Machell's report below). This is odd as 1L41 (10.05) KX-York remained booked loco hauled for a long time after this date." Alan Baylis writes...

Monday 24/03/80 Syd Young remembers... "A proposed "day's shopping" in Edinburgh was enough to convince my cousin (who had no interest in trains whatsoever) to come with me.
