Pip Dunn says... "Another typical Summer Saturday, but what would be out? In the midlands, the Leicester-Skeg was the only train with 20s, but a relatively uninspiring combo of 20075 & 20183 and the Abers were all dud rats bar one. Decided not to go to Sheffield (That wonderful sixth sense of hindsight tells me this was a bad move - I never had 37209 which was on the Sheff-Blackpool that day, nor 40168 on the S&C) Anyway, decided to stay local in the Birmingham area - I can only assume 21 years on that I had low cash syndrome. So, a pair of 310s into Brum on the first train from Tile Hill and a very rateable Immingham no heat 47294 on the 0815 to Yarmouth.... off to Nuneaton to return on an equally impressive Cardiff 47374. One out and back move, two big, big winning 47s.... This was to set the trend for the day - it was most definitely a 47 day.... 47155 was on 1O27 - the 0645 York-Portsmouth, so I did the inevitable local leap to International for 86227 back to BNS for some gen. 47241 (no heat Cardiff) was taking over 1O74 - the 0958 Manchester-Brighton, at Coventry. This arrived with 85026 - not bad - and sure enough, 47241 appeared... The 1E81, 0930 Poole-York relief was always a good bet for something unusual - often a no heat 47 - and today didn't disappoint too much as it was a winning 31327 which returned me to Brum via Solihull. 47347 then appeared on the 0855 Weymouth Bradford, so safe in the knowledge the Massive 47361 was on the Yarmouth-Chesterfield, this was a double whammy - a winner and a means to get for 361. It even went via the Lifford curve - which may have been new track at the time, although I am no BLS saddo... Off at Derby, a cart to Nottingham and 'Wilton Endeavour' back to Derby. Game over? Not quite - Crewe's 47329 appeared on the 1606 York-Cardiff and took me back to Birmingham. 86255 to cove to end a very good day's work on a midland Railtourer. the following day wasn't too bad either as 47247, 47228, 47362 were all duly sampled as well!! 310092 ae BY 2G49 0639 Coventry-Birmingham NS Tile Hill Birmingham NS 19.25 310093 ae BY 47294 xos IM 1E66 0815 Birmingham NS-Yarmouth Birmingham NS Nuneaton 20.75 47374 xos CF 2G85 0842 Leicester-Birmingham NS Nuneaton Birmingham NS 20.75 47155 xi CF 1O27 0645 York-Portsmouth Birmingham NS Birmingham Int 8.5 86227 xe WN 1G22 0840 Euston-Wolverhampton Birmingham Int Birmingham NS 8.5 85026 xe CE 1O74 0958 Manchester-Brighton Birmingham NS Coventry 19.25 47241 xos CF Coventry Leamington Spa 9.5 31327 xb IM 1E81 0930 Poole-York (relief) Leamington Spa Birmingham NS 24.25 47347 xos CD 1E28 0855 Weymouth-Bradford Birmingham NS Derby (via Lifford) 48 DMU ve DY xxxx 1420 Crewe-Cleethorpes Derby Nottingham 16 47361 xos TE 1E06 1327 Yarmouth-Chesterfield Nottingham Derby 16 47329 xos CD 1V94 1606 York-Cardiff Derby Birmingham NS 41 86255 xe WN 1A78 1620 Holyhead-Euston Birmingham NS Coventry 19.25" Jeff Hawken recalls ... I kicked off from Glasgow the previous evening with 47708 on the 2100
shove from Queen Street, then dropped nicely onto 26005 on the 2315 Edinburgh - Carstairs portion of the 2325 Glasgow - Paignton. The main train was 85023, which I took forward to Carlisle. Now for the main feature - the 2045 Euston to Inverness and Stranraer additional, the latter portion of which was allocated 40160 from Carlisle, where the train divided. The 40 duly produced, and took us on a one-way only trip into Stranraer - well you can't turn down a 40 on that route can you? So, how do we get out of Stranraer? Help was at hand in the form of some InterRailing backpackers. "Hello plees. Ess thees where wee change for Eenverness?" said one of them. I took her to the station supervisor, and suggested that the best way to help her would be to send her back to Carlisle on the ECS which was waiting to depart with 40160. So the ECS would need to be made into a Control Relief - solely with the purpose of assisting the stranded backpackers of course. After a swift phone call, all was arranged, and the backpackers were duly escorted onto the train. About 20 assorted bashers also decided that they wanted to leave Stranraer in a hurry, so we set off back to Carlisle on our personal train. The scheduled departure time of the ECS was at 0645, but we left at 0628, and ran ahead of schedule all the way to Carlisle. While on route, word reached us that the 0945 Blackpool - Stranraer was allocated 37292 from Carlisle. That was the biggest 37 of all - since it was fitted with an uprated power unit of 2000 horsepower, and was usually to be found restricted to heavy freight workings. So, on arrival at Carlisle what a dilemma - 40168 on the 1040 to Leeds, or 37292 back to Stranraer? The roadshow split, most opting for the 40 to Leeds - where they dropped onto 40013 forward to York, and 40155 to Newcastle or 40135 to Liverpool. I decided to stick with the Stranraer route, so waited for the outrageous required mega-37 to perform. It was load 10, and I managed a couple of decent photos of it on the climb up from Girvan, and again at Stranraer. Another deciding factor in going to Stranraer was I knew what the 1835 Stranraer - Glasgow was allocated - 37155, also required (and my only run with that loco). So, 2 trips Stranraer in the day, in and out with a 40, then in with one required NB 37 for another one out. Throw in a Roarer and a slow-speed 26 for good measure - a classic Summer Saturday. 37292 was out again the following day on the 1505 Glasgow - Stranraer and 1835 return - another nice afternoon out. Tim Rogers moves for that day... "86003 Carlisle to Crewe 1742 F.
