Below, a selection of moves and anecdotes from the day in question (The 1st Network day) ... Jason Hall remembers... "I did the following....... Was planning a day out on the NSE but found 50028 was allocated to end up at Swansea. As one of my top two decided I'd stick with her. So: HST Bedf - St.Pancras 50028 1C21 08.50 Padd - Paignton (£1 piece gripped between Padd and Reading). I recall masses of clowns bellowing. All had gone by Reading. 50028 1B36 14.15 Paignton - Swansea (gripped twice but neither seemed to care!) Filled in with some DMUs and beers 50028 1C82 19.30 Milford - Bristol from Swansea. (No grip!) Ended up filling in a pass on the 'up' after a grip out of Bristol..." Gary Lawson recalls... "My moves from the first Network Day. Total lack of imagination resulted in me doing a pointless fill-in move Euston - Bushey and back after getting off the up splitter. Or did I do that because the Tube didn't open until 0530 and I refused to do a bus...? As a 50 basher living in Leeds, the Cromptons spoilt things somewhat. Highlight was viewing freshly painted 50017 roll into Salisbury (the novelty livery wore off after that day) and whipping in 47330 on the last Pennine home..."
Les Wearne says... "My move on this day was: 50005 Plymouth-Newquay 0002 Paddington - Newquay 50015 Newquay-Plymouth 0918 Newquay - Newcastle 50033 Plymouth-Newquay 0725 Manchester-Newquay 50033 Newquay-Plymouth 1710 Newquay - Wolverhampton " Peter Kazmierczak remembers... I spent the afternoon on Derby Station and recorded the following loco Peter White says... I hereby submit my tribute to the momentous, first 'Network Day'. The premise behind the first 'Network Day' was outrageous. In those days some of us 'Devon lot' didn't 'get out much' so the deal of a ticket from our doorstep to anywhere 'not local', for a quid, was great we thought....Yeah, us and about a million other people. We started the day on the first Up Mule train. Didn't always write down Logs in those days, but your site reveals it to have been 50009, which we took to Basingstoke for a DEMU to Reading. We did some Brush moves on the Inter-regionals, and I guess we may have intended to go for ex-WR 47096 out of Liv.Street later as the gen was out quite early for that. Anyway, I remember falling into winner 47270 at Pad as it was about to leave on the Pembroke. From Reading more Inter-regional moves led to a fall-on to winner 47336 on an Oxford turn. We then headed south on a swelteringly hot air-con set with 47437, but the overcrowding was clearly manic by then and we started to concern ourselves with physically getting on a train home. We bailed at Basingstoke and caught an EMU to Woking to try and steal a march on all those trying to head west on the last Mule. (Note: DESMOND and DADDY...not sure about the people at Waterloo flagging off the Crompton for the Log but you can content yourself with a good GRIN about this...) As we stood at Woking 47450 rolled in right, after our Unit, on a hastily improvised relief from Poole, which we where a bit miffed about. This was compensated for by the appearance of a relief to Yeovil with 33103 which we gratefully forced ourselves aboard, with the bonus of 47258 taking over at Salisbury, and kept down the length of run home on the Log (50044 apparently, also gleaned from your site.) I remember the aforementioned thunderstorm well, very impressive it was, especially the house 'taking it'. It somehow seemed to sum up the day, a bright inception becoming increasingly hot and feverish, before dissolving in chaotic meltdown. Can't imagine it happening now....apart from the chaotic meltdown, of course. 50009 1O15 0548 Ex-W'loo....Exe-Bas DEMU 0824 Bas-Rdg.....Bas-Rdg 47555 1O01 0626 Wolv-Poole....Rdg-Soton 47233 1E61 0940 Poole-Brad.....Soton-Rdg 47543 1F31 1100 Ox-Pad.....Rdg-Pad 47270 1B42 1210 Pad-Pembroke...Pad-Rdg 47233 1E63 0955 Wey-Newc....Rdg-Ox 47602 1O08 0912 York-Poole...Ox-Rdg 47336 1F24 1417 Pad-Ox.....Rdg-Ox 47336 1F37 1600 Ox-Pad.....Ox-Rdg 47437 1O11 0950 Glas-Poole...Rdg-Bas EMU 1826 Bas-W'loo.....Bas-Woking 33103 1V?? 1857 W'loo-Yeovil relief....Woking-Salisbury 47258 1V?? 1857 W'loo-Yeovil relief....Salisbury-Yeovil J 50044 1V19 1910 W'loo-Ex...Yeovil J-Exe Mark Nicoll recalls...
