Pip Dunn writes..."So, the first summer saturday of the year. To be honest I was not looking forward to it - there were no booked Class 20 hauled trains, so I really couldn't get too overjoyed - but I never anticipated I'd be home in time for lunch! That said, I made a morning leap in the hope there may be something to enjoy but when I saw 37426 on the 0725 Brum-Aber I thought "that's it, it's all gone crap". Not so much the 37 (it was winner!) but the realisation that trains booked for NB were now going to be ETH. 37427/429 were also out on the Pwllheli - rateable in 2006 - flaggable 20 years ago! I did 37426 to Wolves and then went shopping in Brum before heading home. In fairness, 1986 was, personally, an appalling year (only surpassed by 1987) for moves, but the reality wasn't so much the trains, it was a change in my social life - more drinking, first serious girlfriend and going to more and more gigs seemed to have dovetailed with the loss of the Skegs. I carried on coming out when 20s went to Skeg (couple of winning pairs - 20032/039, 20022/092) - which they did a bit more regularly as the year progressed - but it was to be 1988 when 20s got a booked job and i got a resurgent interest in doing moves. I sometimes regret not doing more in 1986/87 - there was still a lot to do, it's just after years of NB, you kind of took too much for granted, and so 86/87 seemed poor by comparison. In fact there were still 25s, 26s, 27s, 31s, 33s, 37s, 45s, 47s, 50s and 73s to enjoy! I just didn't see the point, although the afore mentioned beer/Deb/gigs combo explains a lot (and i don't regret any of them!). Made up for it in 1988/89 though - when first full time job (= cash) meant I would leap for 20s all the time!" Mark Skidmore says...
