Where were you?

Pip Dunn writes...
"So, the first summer saturday of the year.  To be honest I was not looking forward to it - there were no booked Class 20 hauled trains,
so I really couldn't get too overjoyed - but I never anticipated I'd be home in time for lunch!

That said, I made a morning leap in the hope there may be something to enjoy but when I saw 37426 on the 0725 Brum-Aber I thought
"that's it, it's all gone crap". Not so much the 37 (it was winner!) but the realisation that trains booked for NB were now going to be ETH.
37427/429 were also out on the Pwllheli - rateable in 2006 - flaggable 20 years ago!

I did 37426 to Wolves and then went shopping in Brum before heading home. In fairness, 1986 was, personally, an appalling year (only
surpassed by 1987) for moves, but the reality wasn't so much the trains, it was a change in my social life - more drinking, first
serious girlfriend and going to more and more gigs seemed to have dovetailed with the loss of the Skegs.

I carried on coming out when 20s went to Skeg (couple of winning pairs - 20032/039, 20022/092)  - which they did a bit more regularly
as the year progressed - but it was to be 1988 when 20s got a booked job and i got a resurgent interest in doing moves. I sometimes regret
not doing more in 1986/87 - there was still a lot to do, it's just after years of NB, you kind of took too much for granted, and so
  86/87 seemed poor by comparison. In fact there were still 25s, 26s, 27s, 31s, 33s, 37s, 45s, 47s, 50s and 73s to enjoy! I just didn't see
the point, although the afore mentioned beer/Deb/gigs combo explains a lot (and i don't regret any of them!).

Made up for it in 1988/89 though - when first full time job (= cash) meant I would leap for 20s all the time!

Chris Chadwick writes...

"My memory is a bit sketchy, but I remember doing the following move;

37426 New St - Sandwell -&- Dudley
85??? Sandwell -&- Dudley - New st
47346 0815 New St - Yarmouth , New St-Nuneaton
45118 Notts - Paignton? Nuneaton - New St
47085 1030 New St - Yarmouth , New St - Nuneaton
Tram back to New St

Sorry it's a bit vague but these are all definite as it was the 1st
summer sat. and 47346 was very 'big' at the time."

'UD' adds...

"I also had 37426, it was on 1J18 BNS - Aber, which it worked throughout.
For some reason I did it to Telford Central?  The only gen that I had early on that day was for
47085 -&- 47346 as detailed above.  Did 085 on 1E72, also only to Nuneaton, with hindsight
taking it out to meet 346 would have been the best thing to do, but I was sure
that more NB stuff must have been on offer, so I returned to BNS on 1M30, 0740 ex
Norwich, which was 31417.  Then it was fester mode, with  the odd 'TC' move until
1E80 1621 BNS - NR, with 31411+31446, which was taken to Nuneaton for 346 back
on 1M68, the 1245 ex Yarmouth.  If there was more NB out, it wasn't on anything through
BNS as far as I knew.

Here follows a list of ETH turns that I noted that day:

47423 1O03 0710 Liverpool - Poole
47475 1M10 0658 Paddington - Llandudno
31417 1M30 0740 Norwich - BNS
45150 1O08 0912 York - Poole, to BNS
31410 1O08 0912 York - Poole, from BNS
81022 1S39 0834 Poole - Glasgow, from Cov
47628 1O09 0812 Newcastle - Weymouth, from BNS
47509 1E61 0940 Poole - Bradford, to BNS
31413+31430 1M  0842 Yarmouth - BNS
31413+31430 1E76 1420 BNS - Ipswich
31411+31446 1M67 1050 Yarmouth - BNS
31411+31446 1E80 1621 BNS - Norwich
47346 1M68 1245 Yarmouth - BNS
47639 1M23 1357 Poole - Manchester P
81020 1M45 1210 Penzance - Manchester P, from BNS
50032 1S61 0735 Cardiff - Glasgow C
47627 1O05 0558 Bradford - Poole, to BNS
47620 1O05 0558 Bradford - Poole, from BNS
45118 1V45 0829 Nottingham - Paignton
31416+31459 1V49 0840 Liverpool - Paignton, from BNS

Elsewhere, 37430 worked 1J24 -&- 1A81 to/from Aber,
while 37427+37429 worked 1J20, 2J26 -&- 1A85 to/from Pwllheli.

Other workings reported previously are:
  47298 1E55 1045 Liverpool LS - Yarmouth
  47346 1E66 0819 Birmingham NS - Yarmouth, to Norwich
  47346 1E82 1825 Birmingham NS - Norwich
  45046 1V29 2250(16/5)Glasgow - Paington, between Birmingham NS - Bristol TM
  45051 1V60 0926 Bradford - Penzance, into Bristol TM"
