Where were you?

      'UD' recalls the following...

86232 1A21 0725 Manchester Piccadilly - London Euston                                     (Stoke-on-Trent - Birmingham NS)

I have no idea why there was such a late start.  There must have been a good reason, but that is lost in the mists of time.
Amongst electric's stabled at Wolves was 81010, while 25037 was with an overhead line repair train at Soho, and 81011
was noted as parked up at New Street.   We arrived  in time for required 47326 about to depart with the 1O27 0645 York -
Portsmouth Harbour, a booked NB on Saturdays, but this was rejected in favour of 1J20 and the Cambrian Rat's move.

86235 1J20 0735 London Euston - Aberystwyth                                                    (Birmingham NS - Wolverhampton)

I jumped off at Wolves in order to snatch a quick photo of the rats before rejoining the train.
81006, another required engine, called at Wolves with the 0820 Liverpool Lime Street - Paignton, while  25307+25296
were already awaiting the following 1J24 to Aberystwyth

25109+25199 1J20 0735 London Euston - Aberystwyth                                        (Wolverhampton - Shrewsbury)

Then came the lengthy Shrewsbury fester.  33019 working 1V04 1003 Crewe - Cardiff Central while
25326, 47262 & 08123 were stabled.

25279+25287 1A46 1010 Aberystwyth - London Euston                                       (Shrewsbury - Wolverhampton)

1A46 passed 1J24 and it wasn't usually possible to cover all three pairs without spending the entire day up the Cambrian.
On arrival back at Wolves, 81010 was still present, but it was 85037 that worked 1A46 forward...

85037 1A46 1010 Aberystwyth - London Euston                                                   (Wolverhampton - Birmingham NS)

45015 had arrived 'up the bank' with a Glasgow bound additional.

47487 1E76 1420 Birmingham New Street - Norwich                                             (Birmingham NS - Nuneaton)

37039 & 47236 were visible at Saltley.  I always thought it was worth noting down what was stabled around the area, in order to have
a better idea of what was about.  You could never be sure if a loco you'd seen might work later, or maybe the next day?  At Nuneaton
required 47189 was working the Portsmouth - Leeds.  This was turned down to await 1M67, on which we had no gen, but we were
soon kicking ourselves when 1M67 was an EH pair.

31409+31420 1M67 1043 Great Yarmouth - Birmingham New Street                    (Nuneaton - Birmingham NS)

Saltley seamed to be filling up; 56053 , 56066 & 47352 had all arrived.  Would they work tomorrow's drags?  Although the move to
cover 1E76 & 1M67 had not proved a total success, it did at least put us into position to scratch LADY.

46026 1E22 1004 Newquay - Newcastle                                                                (Birmingham NS - Burton-on-Trent)
?                                                                                                                              (Burton-on-Trent - Birmingham NS)

Not sure how we got back, presume a cart?  The following had found there way to SY:  50046, 47056, 45033 & 45015.

47296 1E82 1818 Birmingham New Street - Norwich                                             (Birmingham NS - Hinckley)
47330 1M76 1559 Great Yarmouth - Birmingham New Street                                 (Hinckley - Nuneaton)

This move should really have been to Leicester, but late running meant we would never get there.  45076 came through Hinckley
with the Paignton - Nottingham.  I also recall, some dubious Punks ripping out a couple of tables and throwing them out of the
windows on 1M76... and then it was off home...

86325 1D71 1900 London Euston - Holyhead                                                         (Nuneaton - Stafford)
    008                                                                                                                      (Stafford - Stoke)

Although these were far from perfect moves, there was still so much about back in 1984 you couldn't go too far wrong!
