Where were you?

"The Timelord" writes..."The Timelord has been very quiet of late (ploughing through a load of gen for 1979 amongst other things), but couldn't resist this "Where were you?" as it is a tour of the East Midlands and East Anglia that starts and finishes with the same loco in two very different places. It started just before midnight on 11/7 at Sheffield, bedding down on 2332 to Manchester with 31291. However this had to be abandoned when 31317 rolled in on 2359 Sheffield-St Pancras. I joined 31317 and 12/7 started just as we were pulling out of Sheffield station. Of course 31317 only got to Derby where it was replaced by 47531, which was taken to Leicester for 45143 coming back on 0005 St Pancras -Derby (via Notts), just to keep out of the cold. At Derby we got gen that 31153+233 were on 1Z banana but nobody had a clue what this train was. There was a Loughborough-Clacton mystex which had to be covered, by doing 45135 on 0645 Derby-Leicester and 0748 Leicester-Leeds back to Loughborough, but the mystex turned up with 47358. So it was on to Nottingham with 20161+168 on the Leicester-Skeg to see if there were any specials heading in that direction. After a not very long wait 31153+233 appeared from the Derby direction so I got on at the front, which was completely empty, not really caring where the train was going. After a few minutes the guard appeared, none too amused, to tell us that the train was a Derby-Skegness schools charter. When the train came to a stand in Sleaford station I decided that this was a good opportunity to avoid the Skegness platform Gestapo, so I bailed out for 53039+54042 to Grantham and 43045+43042 on 0935 Hull-KingsX to get to Table 18 land. As we approached Peterborough 37220 was seen hauling 70000 Britannia, I think going to Peter Brotherhood's for repair. 31160 turned up on 1015 Brum-Norwich, but for some reason I only did this to March, for 31403 on to Ely on 1258 Peterborough- Parkeston and 37072 to Thetford on 1235 LivSt-Norwich. Then it was back to Peterborough with 31401 on 1414 Norwich-Brum. Here a crowd had assembled as 37220 had been nicked to do 1641 Peterborough-Ipswich, so I scooped that in to March for 51439 +54065 back to Peterborough and 31184 into Cambridge on 1525 ex Brum. The plan was to go home for an early night after the rancid overnight that had kicked the day off, but that went out of the window on arrival at Cambridge. It was too late for 31148, which rolled in on 1654 LivSt-Cambridge, but when the rather massive 31245 came down on 1715 ex LivSt it seemed rude to refuse it on the 2023 return, especially as 31317 was sitting in the yard on the Peterborough-LivSt vans and thus in diagram for 2205 LivSt-Cambridge. So 12/7/83 started at midnight with 31317 from Sheffield to Derby and finished at about 2330 with 31317 from LivSt to Cambridge, with quite a lot in between." Captain Grey says... "Was down in Cornwall on a bashing/drinking week and started off the day from a St Ives B & B for the cart to St Erth to see the very first coffinised Night Riviera. 'Great Western' was turned out for this so we caused a minor riot to show our disgust that it wasn't a Hoover and my mate Pete got the train stopped by bellowing (winding clockwork key) out the window leaving St Erth resulting in a 10 late arrival in Penzance. Oh dear. I think we were too hung over to get into serious bashing so did a few ned leaps and ended up back in Penzance for a day on the beach before a double headed Hoover on B61 and back to the beers and bed and breakfast in St Ives. 47500 ST ERTH PENZANCE 0005 PAD-PZ SLEEPERS 1B02 5.75 * FIRST MK3 1B02 50041 PENZANCE TRURO 0905 PZ-MAN PICC RELIEF 25.75 50005 TRURO PENZANCE 0700 EX SD-PZ 2C68 25.75 50009 PENZANCE HAYLE 1155 PZ-PLYM 2C85 7.25 45120 HAYLE PENZANCE 0750 BTM-PZ 7.25 * 50009 PENZANCE ST ERTH 1815 PZ-BTM 1B61 5.75 M50026 50026 PENZANCE ST ERTH 1815 PZ-BTM 1B61 5.75 M50009" Trevor Machell logged the following...
