Where were you?

      Peter Scott remembers...

40082 MANCHESTER to MILEPOST 93 FROM KX 111 1E34 - 0815 Manchester Piccadilly to Yarmouth
31131 MP93 FROM KX to PETERBOROUGH 16.5 1E34 - 0815 Manchester Piccadilly to Yarmouth
HST PETERBOROUGH to YORK 112
40035 YORK to KINGS CROSS 188 1E84 - 1315 Edinburgh to Kings Cross (Relief)
85008 EUSTON to CREWE 158 1H24 - 2025 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly

Prior to 1983 the 0815 Manchester - Yarmouth was booked a 40 only as far
as Sheffield where the train was re-engined with more eastern motive
power. During 1983 it was booked a 40 throughout, and so my first real
chance of having a 40 into East Anglia.

The plan today was to do 'The Yarmouth' all the way. It was a good
one-engine mileage move (nearly 450 miles round trip) but it was a long
hard day to do it!

The move started with a 304 unit on the 0630 Crewe to Manchester
stopper. Quite a horrible journey, but a decent plus onto the 0815
Yarmouth.

Sometimes, when doing this move, if the 0804 Manchester-Skegness was a
40 we'd do that to Sheffield. I see from 'Timewarp' it was 40195 today;
but due to the long journey to Norwich the preference was to get a compo
at the front at Manchester and stay there.

On this day 40082 got as far as milepost 93 from Kings Cross (between
Grantham and Peterborough I assume). Being rescued by a 31 wasn't part
of the plan and we duly bailed at Peterborough.

I suppose we had a back-up move of getting somewhere for 40195 on the
return Skegness-Manchester, but there was more juicy gen afoot: 40035 on
an Edinburgh-Kings Cross relief. We - and about 30 others I seem to
remember - quickly realised we could get to York for it.

Being priv helped a lot here, as I was on a 'box' (only recently having
replaced the old free pass) so it wasn't a problem for me; but what it
cost the others I dread to think... if they paid of course!

We all boarded a tram and headed for York. I don't remember too much
about 40035's run into Kings Cross - other than I felt it was something
special having a 40 into 'The Cross'. I had only one previous
experience - back in April of this same year, when 40013 had worked a
similar relief. By 1981 I was doing nothing but 40s, and living in
Crewe it was all too easy to stay on home ground - what point would
there be just heading over to the east coast, just on the off chance of
something? So as with Norwich, I knew there would be few chances to
have this kind of opportunity. So I do remember it with fondness.

A 'roarer' home was an added bonus to a day that could have gone
seriously wrong, but ended up providing my second, and last, 40 into
London."

"Cart St Ives-St Erth

Derby-Penzance 5.75
50034 Furious Penzance-St Erth 1A07 2045SO Penzance-Paddington 5.75
Cart St Erth-St Ives

Not really so much bashing as drinking. Staying in St Ives in a B&B
for a week, we'd vary the beer and clubbing with daytime leaps...
this one being to more pubs and beer in Penzance and back to St Erth
for more of the same in the evening. Insect Mileage? Never!"
