Well, this was a bit of a different day.
It started pretty uneventfully with me heading for Sheffield blind.
At Sheffield
there was some vague gen about a Leeds-New
Clee Footex but no-one knew any times so I just set off for Leeds
anyway. Eventually I found out the
time of the outward train and, having bought a ticket, managed to get on
this Eastern
monster. I was very lucky here because
some people who were later than me getting tickets had to make do with
the
second relief for this match, a DMU.
But what to do at New Clee which was (and still is) merely a platform and
a bus
shelter? Part of the problem was
that I didn't know the return timings but also in those days all the pubs
had to close
by law at 2pm. So therefore no retiring
to the pub. This eventually led to myself and the basher I was with
sitting for
about three hours on New Clee station.
Not pleasant but certainly memorable. And once back in Leeds, 47304
out
of the blue back to Manchester certainly
proved to be the icing on the cake loco-wise. And to this day I have
no idea
who was playing; presumably Leeds versus
either Grimsby or Cleethorpes?"
