" For some reason I was heading for a weekend
in Brum rather than frequenting my normal Sheffield (student)
haunts. Don't know why,
as it wasn't the footy season – it must have been beer and/or gig related. I obviously wasn't established on the gen grapevine as I wasn't aware of the two 31s on the early relief, but turned out in good time to hear about T2. I mucked around with a couple of EH31 moves, and then awaited the beast at Sheffield. I recall a horde of bashers amassing and eventually the tractor rolling in with fire bell ringing. I can't remember whether money actuallychanged hands with the driver to persuade him to ignore it, but the possibility was definitely discussed! Anyway, whether financial or not, the persuasion worked and eventually it was off to Brum (probably accompanied by a Sheffield platform ticket, to be supplemented by a single from Duddeston from the New St Excess Fares window – a total outlay of probably 15p)! I remember snapping the tractor at New St, only later to knacker the film when trying to extract it from the camera – I regret my sausage fingers even more now than then. I was out in the Brum area on Saturday, and without resorting to the Cambrian (I was brought up on a spotting diet of Rats in the West Mids so didn't rate them), managed to grab a good variety of traction ... including T2 returning north in tandem with the Scottish tractor. Saturday (7th) For the record: 47447 New St – International 50009 International – New St 86315 New St – Cov 50009 Cov - Banbury 37002+37192 Banbury - New St (including Hatton bank!) 1E19 1200 Reading - York relief 31210 New St – Burton 1E28 0855 Weymouth - Bradford , between Reading - Leeds 47360 Burton - Derby 1E39 0918 Tenby - Hull, from Birmingham NS, 37046 had failed. 47535 Derby - New St 47445 New St – International 47480 International – New St 86103 New St – Wolves 40058 Wolves – New St I also turned out for the drags on Sunday (8th), but managed to capture: 40079 New St – Sandwell 1H03 0832 Birmingham NS - Manchester P 47063 Sandwell – New St 1V65 0844 Wolverhampton - Weston-S-M Before embarking on: 37176+37206 hauling 86321 New St – Nuneaton 1A06 0857 Wolverhampton - Euston A couple more EH duffs followed (483 and 538). I don't know why I ignored 58002, or how I got back to Sheffield, but it wasn't by rail, as I started an East Mids from Sheffield on Thursday 12th ….. more on this later!" 'UD' says.. "Not 'on tour' on this date, and the only entry in the diary shows: 25322 working 3E25 Stoke - Peterborough Vans." "Heading into Brum on the usual first unit from Coventry, I was
overjoyed to hear the gen - the Derby Skegness was a double score of
Tinsley
choppers - 20030 and 20042 (which I had missed earlier in the week as post-school moves for the Skegs were not popular with my parents!) while better still was the Sheffield-Skegness had dropped another pair of Tinsley machines - 20029 and 20112 - also another double score. At this time, several Class 20s were being returned to traffic after overhaul and dual braking, and all four fell into that category. After
an HST to Derby I was facing a great, and simple move that would net me
four TI 20s in a few hours. Sadly it did not transpire that way,
as 20030/042 failed and were replaced by 47283. Whereas this was also a requirement and it was still the best means to get for the returning Sheffield train, for a Class 20 basher, it still felt like an injury time goal against you... It was a blazing hot day, and as my paper round money stretched only to my weekly Midland Railtourer ticket and day return to Sheffield, I had to endure a couple of hours to kill at Nottingham with no other choice but to sunbathe on the platform.... Anyway,
sure enough 20029/112 arrived and the loss of 20030/042 was soon
forgotten about... I did the 20s - with a very helthy contingent
on board - to Chesterfield to bail for what i thought was 37107 behind on the Yarmouth-Leeds, but it was a more appealing Healey Mills 37031 that appeared (it was meant to have been on the Yarmouth-Newcastle, but that was, in fact 37107). The new 37 was done to Sheffield. The
day before I'd missed the rather large Immingham 37002 on a relief, so
was pleased to hear it had joined with Eastfield boilered 37192 on
the 0930 Poole-York Relief. I wasn't going to turn this down, although it had a major problem in the fact it was Right Away York, not a position of strength at all, but IM 37s were like rocking horse sh*t in those days, so simply could not be flagged. It wasn't. I remember the train was short - 5 or 6 coaches but as I was enjoying the thrash as they rounded the curve into Rotherham station, an emergency brake application was made. The train stopped in the station - or some of it did at least, I can't remember, and all hell broke out as a load of bashers bailed off. The guard, natuarlly, went mental as he realised it was an obvious brake application for no other reason than to allow a simple move for the cranks. It was then like the opening scene from Shameless as Frank Gallaghar shouts 'Scatter' - because that is what everyone did as Bert tried to round some up and try to find the culprit. I assume he didn't because the 37s were soon on their way to York, but minus a fair few passengers I
opted for the first train back to Sheffield just to get away from the
scene of someone else's crime, from which I had effectively looted a
move!!
A DMU took me back to Sheff, but in the knowledge that 37123 was on the Scarborough-Nottingham, i decided to head back to Rotherham, by which time the dust had settled. 37123 was not only a winner, but a good means to head south - and i went through to its destination for an HST to Leicester. The last move was 47337 to Birmingham on the last returning train from East Anglia and then the ever rateable 50031 Hood back to Coventry on the last Padd for a bus home to end a pretty eventful day. I did catch up with 20030 and 20042 - in 1987 and 1988 respectively... 310085 ae BY 2G49 0639 Coventry-Birmingham NS Coventry Birmingham NS 19.25 |
