Where were you?

Below, a selection of gen, moves and anecdotes from the day in question...

Mark Nicoll writes...
"Details about the actual trains are a bit mixed but the memories of 47524 expiring spectacularly at
Ashchurch are still clear - a handful of bashers equipped with the fire extinguishers from the sleepers
including yours truly at track level attacking the blaze - it was in works for almost 12 months I seem
  to recall.

S19 was always a hellfire train and never failed to interest

  86420 GLASGOW - CREWE 1V62      (7th DEC)
33040 CREWE - NEWPORT           (I think this was the 0805 Crewe Cardiff)
47442 NEWPORT - CARDIFF                 (1110 ex Newport to Cardiff
33025 CARDIFF - BRISTOL TM      (LATER WORKED 1610 BTM - WEY)
  33008 BTM - BATH                        (1510 BTM - PORTSMOUTH)
33044 BATH - BRISTOL TM                 (1531 BATH - BTM ..EX PORTSMOUTH)
  33064 BTM - WESTBURY            (1620 BTM -WEY)
33211 WESTBURY - BTM            (1758 ex WESTBURY TO BRISTOL)
  43XXX BTM - BATH
  33016 BATH - BTM                        (1610 PORTSMOUTH - BRISTOL)
47524 BTM - ASHCHURCH           (1S19 via SEVERN TUNNEL) THEN CAUGHT FIRE
  37270/163 ASHCHURCH  - NEW ST   (1S19)
  81017 NEW ST - WOLVES           (1S19)
  47451 WOLVES - PRESTON          (1S19)
  81017 PRESTON - CARLISLE                (1S19)
  47497 CARLISLE - GLASGOW C      (1S19)"

Alan Baylis says...
"Today's moves were restricted by my promise to give a friend from Grantham (guess who!) a ride around
Birmingham in my Triumph TR7 before it was part exchanged for a new car in the following week.

   47562      Birmingham NS - Coventry      0645 York - Portsmouth 1O27
   85010      Coventry - Birmingham NS      0633 Poole - Manchester 1M88
   81017      Birmingham NS - Wolverhampton     1047 Birmingham -  Liverpool  1F10
   86241      Wolverhampton - Birmingham NS      1127 Wolverhampton -  Euston 1A36

Great start to the day picking up a Scottish 47 as a 'loco for the year' and a couple of Roarers before
making the promised car move.  I was targeting 1,000 'locos for the year' and on my return after a lunch
break found another 47 and two 31s that I needed.

   86239      Birmingham NS - Birmingham Int.      1518 Birmingham NS - Euston 1A54
   47418      Birmingham Int. - Birmingham NS     1140 Poole - Manchester  1M14
   31142      Birmingham NS - Leicester     1610 Birmingham - Norwich 1E80
   31450      Leicester - Birmingham NS     1720 Peterborough - Birmingham NS 2M05
   87006     Birmingham NS - Wolverhampton     1810 Euston - Manchester 1H27
   86254     Wolverhampton - Birmingham NS     1902 Manchester -  Paddington 1V19

Not quite a perfect end to the day as V19 should have been a Roarer!
(FWIW I got my 1,000 loco for the year on the 28th December with 26042 on the 40s
Euston - Glasgow railtour and finished with a total of 1,005 for the year)."

NOTE:  These days there are less than 1000 locos passed for use on Network Rail and most of those are
very unlikely to have worked a single passenger train during the last twelve months (and probably won't work
one during the next twelve months either)!
