Where were you?

  Alan Baylis recalls...
"47599  Birmingham NS – Derby                    0853 Penzance – Newcastle 1E91
  37002  Derby – Birmingham NS                    1420 York – Plymouth 1V49
  86006  Birmingham NS – Wolverhampton    1710 Euston – Wolverhampton 1G39
  86239  Wolverhampton – Birmingham NS    1620 Holyhead – Euston 1A78

A phone call in the afternoon told me I had a new 37 to go for so I took the rest of the day off and went to get it from Derby.  However
the train from Penzance was running late, so late there was doubt we would make it at Derby.  Further signal stops en-route reduced us to
quivering wrecks as we slipped into Derby a mere minute before the 37 was due to depart. It was running 45 minutes late and now we were
worried about it being a loco failure!  Frantic phone calls were made to ascertain its whereabouts and we were in luck.  It went no further
than Birmingham so I was grateful that I had taken the afternoon off rather than risked a southbound move!  On return from Wolves I found
they were dragging the Euston trains but I rejected these locos and went home."
  Captain Grey remembers...
"I wasn't out on the Saturday but had 37002 on the Friday. Did the usual move to Sheffield for a SYPTE card to ned around South Yorks on
the goils and on the off chance anything NB would produce. Word soon got out regarding the reliefs and a fast leap to the booking office was
made for a single Sheff-Derby. The pair of goils were done and I couldn't help wonder if they'd make it all the way to Plymouth as this pair
would be pretty massive on the South West main line on a Class 1 train. Anybody know? Probably only to BTM is my guess. Time for a quick
fill in move on a unit to Belper to see my grandad for a couple of pints and back in time to witness that familiar platform 4 atmosphere at Derby.
'The next train to arrive on platform 4 will be a relief train for Plymouth'. That quote still almost sends shivers up my spine. Round it came at
the top of the station... big filthy eyes (split box) and snout. What a state 37002 was in. I think just about every one of the roadshow present
scored it. I was NV to New Street... not too bad on the outward as these rarely got gripped, but I do remember having to bog it on the tram
on the way back!  Good times!  Scored everything bar 45127 that day!
