The pope visited Cardiff, but where were you?Richard Astley recalls... "I hadn't long started bashing in earnest (about 1 year) and was living in Bristol whilst working my way through my Industrial Training part of my HND from Huddersfield Polytechnic. Being as it was Pope day in Cardiff I took a day off work and had the following: 47119 2115 Penzance - Cardiff (relief) Bristol TM - Cardiff 47502 0200 Fishguard - Paddington Cardiff - Newport 40148 0118 Bangor - Cardiff (relief) Newport - Cardiff HST 0540 Swansea - Paddington Cardiff - Newport 31216/239 0555 Bristol - Cardiff Newport - Cardiff 47202 0735 Cardiff - Swindon (relief) Cardiff - Newport 37269 0744 Gloucester - Cardiff Newport - Cardiff 37302 1240 Cardiff - Barry Island (relief) Cardiff - Dinas Powys 47105 1253 Barry Island - Cardiff (relief) Dinas Powys - Cardiff 37256 1345 Cardiff - Bristol Cardiff - Newport 37258 1338 Cardiff - Gloucester Newport - Severn Tunnel Jct 47087 1210 Portsmouth - Cardiff Severn Tunnel Jct - Cardiff 37257 1707 Cardiff - Bristol (relief) Cardiff - Newport HST 1620 Bristol - Swansea (relief) Newport - Cardiff 37295 1825 Cardiff - Barry Island (relief) Cardiff - Grangetown 47121 1800 Barry Island - Cardiff (relief) Grangetown - Cardiff 45116 2120 Cardiff - Penzance (relief) Cardiff - Bristol TM Being as i required so much back then it was a case of take the newies for as short a distance & get back to Cardiff as quickly as possible to see what dropped next. In those days I had no prior gen of what was to work next & all leaps were blind. Even so, I score 6 large NB tractors, 2 peds & 2 boilered duffs, so a pretty good day. Sadly 40148 was dud!!!" Jeff Hawken writes... "A little more detail to add to the gen about Popexes to Cardiff in 1982. 40148 is shown as having worked 1Z96 ex Bangor (Nigel Hayman's answer). In the evening it worked a 2110 departure from Cardiff up the North and West route. The train started 50 minutes late, with 5 people in the cab, and then changed crews at Newport. The combination of route know;edge and traction knowledge on a day when so many additional trains were running was proving to be a headache. It was a warm and sunny summer evening, and the climb up Llanvihangel bank was particularly memorable, 40148 working hard on its load of 10 mark 1s. The Western Region Special Traffic Notice only showed timings as far as Craven Arms, and gave no destination beyond that. The LMR STN gave the destination as Shrewsbury. The public timetable supplement gave the destination as Holyhead. Suffice be it to say that when the train rolled up and "terminated" at Shrewsbury, several passengers were already armed with copies of the public supplement, demanding to continue their journey to Holyhead (the last DMU connection to Crewe having departed some time previously). After some discussion, the Ebbw Junction traincrew took a PNB for 20 minutes, and were then conducted forward to Crewe by the traincrew who should have releived them and taken the stock to Oxley. On arrival at Crewe at 01xx, the train terminated, and passengers were invited to join the service to Holyhead waiting for them in the bay (with 474xx). Strangely, the people who had been so keen to go to Holyhead when they were at Shrewsbury melted into the background, and nobody made the connection at all! " Nigel Hayman writes: "The following all ran into Cardiff from the early hours of 2/6/82 onwards: 47186 1Z49 20.40 ex Plymouth 45009 1Z52 22.30 ex Plymouth 47538 1Z99 ex Chester 50007 1Z29 ex Worcester 47543 1Z26 ex Paignton 47107 1Z60 ex Paddington 47202 1Z98 ex Llandudno Junction 47559 1Z56 ex Paignton 47530 1Z20 ex Exeter 47119 1Z40 ex Penzance 47477 1Z24 ex Bristol TM 47144 1Z61 ex Westbury 47478 1Z30 ex ? 37269 1Z41 ex Barry, then 1Z16 ex Gloucester 47106 1Z21 ex Stroud 47429 1Z55 Fishguard - Bristol, then 1Z55 ex Bristol TM 47459 1Z97 ex Crewe 47098 1Z99 ex Barry, then 1Z99 ex Bristol Pkwy etc., then 16.13 to Llandudno Jcn 45076 1Z47 ex Crewe 47101 1Z38 ex Plymouth 47103 1Z19 ex Barry, then 1Z19 Chepstow - Milford Haven 40148 1Z96 ex Bangor 47015 1Z17 ex ?, then 1Z17 ex Hereford 47233 1Z90 ex Llandudno Junction 47079 1Z35 ex Chepstow 47029 1Z83 ex Hereford, then 12.15 to Portsmouth 45070 1Z22 ex Penzance 47177 1Z49 ex Bristol TM 47491 1Z63 ex Holyhead ? 47069 1Z35 ex Barry 47008 1Z91 ex Worcester 47561 1Z59 ex Weston, then 1Z66 11.45 to Crewe 47196 1Z56 ex Chepstow 47121 ex Barry 45048 1Z77 47088 1Z09 47228 1Z94 ex Manchester 37302 1Z23 ex Bristol TM, 12.35 to Barry Island, 14.15 back, 17.22 Bristol-Cardiff 37090 08.20 ex Swansea, 15.10 Barry Island - Cardiff 47361 1Z88 ex Portsmouth 47087 1Z66 ex Crewe 47428 1Z69 ex Rock Ferry 47279 1Z74, then 1Z63 to Holyhead 47105 1Z52 47244 1Z46, then 1Z30 18.45 to Birmingham 37258 1Z97, then 16.59 to Milford Haven 47142 16.15 to Portsmouth 47487 1Z28 16.25 to Paignton 47530 19.12 to Basingstoke 47079 19.20 to Penzance 37257 14.55 Cardiff - Barry Island, 17.07 Cardiff - Severn Tunnel Jcn" (Posted 15/04/01).
