"Still on a FoS:

Got to Carstairs on the 2310 Edinburgh portion for V60 with one off Haymarket's finest piles of junk - 47269  by which time it was
the 1st of September. Then it was:

"Kicking off from Glasgow Central, I had required 37194 on the 22:30 to Stranraer, which I note Jon Harris had back out from Stranraer the
following morning. I was expecting 47547 back out from Stranraer on the 01:30 to Blackpool, but it had come off at Ayr on the inward journey
due to some minor fault. So I had 27056 + 27059 to Ayr (which was an unadvertised stop). There the type 2s were replaced by the booked 47,
and I got my head down in a DMU in the bays to go back to work in Glasgow in the morning.

After work, I did 47711 on the 14:30 Queen Street - Waverley shove, for a DMU to Cowdenbeath. I'd got the gen that required 25181 was on Fife
locals that afternoon, so took it for the novelty value (25s being quite rare in Fife by this time).  25181 17:10 Cowdenbeath - Edinburgh; 18:08 Edinburgh
 - Cowdenbeath; 19:50 Cowdenbeath - Edinburgh.  Finally 47710 took me back to Queen Street with the 21:00 ex Waverley."

Pip Dunn says...
"My moves for Saturday September 1 1984 were somewhat subdued, and didn't centre around a mega
early start. However, the gen came through a double score of Tinsley 20s had gone to Skeg, so I did a
unit to New Street for a tram to Derby and a DMU to Long Eaton...

then for the ratable combo of
 20176 xo TI 1M35 1237 Skegness-Derby       Long Eaton Derby
 20054 xo TI

Aimed to head home on a DMU to Brum, but leapt at Tamworth for
45014 xb TI 1E22 1004 Newquay-Newcastle     Tamworth Burton on Trent

and then another DMU back to Brum for a unit home.

Looking back at the gen i see two of the handful of '47s' I never had worked into and out of Brum - 47130
(well no chance of that ever...) and 47358 (which I still stand a chance of getting if Freightliner intermodal
will ever let the bloody thing out on a passenger train!)"

'Biggles' recorded the following move...
 47193 Leeds - Appleby
 40152 Appleby - Leeds
 40152 Leeds - Settle
 47193

Mark Skidmore reports ...
"47088 Sheffield - Nottingham on 0530 Bradford Weymouth 1O13

 31437 Melton Mobray - Leicester on 1720 Peterborough - Birmingham 2M05
 47465 Leicester - Sheffield on 1340 Poole Sheffield 1E60 (which occasionally got a 31)"

Tim Proudman recalls ...
"A lazy lie in after a heavy beer session the night before... then the phone goes and I learn that 40152 is working
 the Carlisle-Leeds diagram.

I can make the afternoon return, with a bit of luck. Down to Bristol Temple Meads for the 0910 Paignton -
Newcastle (1E33), which departs with 46052 on 12 mark 1s.  Engine doing well.  Have to change at Sheffield
for Leeds and the move is still on, until... 1E73 arrives with 31284.  From memory, it arrived late, and then
proceeded to stagger all the way to Leeds, and yes, you guessed it, on the last half mile into Leeds station,
'152 thrashes past Carlisle bound. Not a happy bunny. That's why I hate peds."

Alan Baylis says ...
"I see my mate D5233 has contributed to this so I'll skirt over the Cambrian farce.

- 25192 was one of my last four 25's and was allegedly not working, well it was on the front of the train so
I counted it!  We stood at Forden for two hours before being rescued and I have a photograph of the train
with all four locos on it.  Wow, what mileage if they were all working!

"Amazingly, this is one of the few dates that I still have records for, it was my last day of a 'Freedom of Scotland'.
I started on Friday 31.8.84 with the 23:50 Inverness-Glasgow behind 47709, then got various throughout the day
on my return to Leicester:  37191,47708,27042,47006,85013 (Glasgow-New St.), and did a total of 4923  miles
in the week.IIRC, the tickets were about £27.50 then, so I think I got some good value out of it"

">   40152 1M26 1555 Leeds - Carlisle
Must have been at work.  But the day before it was 40099 and I was there."

Jon Porter told us...
" 01/09/84 was at Crewe then Warrington before a pleasant evening at Stafford and Bescot. Then off home to Reading.
Surprise of the day was a Class 40 at Leamington going north on car flats. Anyone know which one it was?"

Robert Pollard comments...
"> 47078 2F84 0713 Birmingham NS - Leicester    (Nuneaton - Leicester)
> 47088 1O13 0530 SO Bradford - Weymouth    (Loughborough - Leicester)

Two of the original named WR 47's in Leicester almost simultaneously was a notable rarity."

Iain Munro says...
"I was only 8 but I was on the lunch time departure from Oban to Glasgow with an unidentified 37.  I was travelling back from a family holiday from Mull to Newcastle.  I know its a long shot but does anyone know which 37 worked this train."

Anthony Hicks recalls...
"A photting trip to Taunton for me, to get some shots with the semaphores in.  My move was...
50005  1E54 Leamington-Birmingham NS
45136  1V67 Birmingham NS-Taunton
43130+141  1Axx Taunton-Reading
47242  1M40 Reading-Leamington

Easily the most hellfire phot of the day was 58002 dragging the failed 12.10 Liverpool-Penzance(?), framed in the massive signal gantry at the West end of the station. IIRC 58002 worked as far as Plymouth - or was it Exeter?"

Tim Rogers says...
"50031 Bristol Tm - Reading 0835 Weston to Paddington
47538 Reading to Oxford 0854 Brighton to Manchester
47303 Oxford to Birmingham (via Solihull) 0902 Pool to Lime St
43186/185 Birmingham to Sheffield 1110 Cardiff to Newcastle
31406 Sheffield to Rotherham 1341 Man Pic to Hull
37031 Rotherham to Sheffield 1240 Blackpool to Sheffield

Runs into the Sunday but it got more interesting then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

'D5233' writes...
"In 1984 I was in the habit of doing B&B in Shrewsbury to cover the Cambrian on the Saturday. For continuity
here is the entire move for the whole weekend.

Friday 31/8/84

45059 Derby - Cheltenham on the 1420 York - Plymouth relief 1V49
43185 + 43186 Cheltenham - Birmingham on 1511 Plymouth - York
87101 Birmingham - Wolverhampton on 1740 Euston - Chester 1D37
47540 Wolverhampton - Shrewsbury on 1D37

Saturday 1/9/84

25193 + 25282 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth on 0744 Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth 2J61

25193 + 25282 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury on 1010 Euston 1A46
25178 + 25192 Shrewsbury - Forden on 1010 Eus - Aberystwyth 1J24

Here the train failed with some kind of brake system fault. Despite repeated 'battering' 25178 just would not run.
Along with a fitter from Bescot I spent ages trying to revive the thing! Meanwhile many pax had taken to picking
blackberries from the well stocked trackside bushes.

Eventually 25285 + 25286 arrived from the Shrewsbury direction and attached to the rear of the train. Vacuum
could not be created owing to the fault on 25178 so we were pushed in unfitted mode to Welshpool.

285 + 286 were then detached and ran round to remove 178 + 192 giving the rather spectacular sight of four 25s
on the front.

Once 178 + 192 had been removed and suitably dumped the move resumed with a sparkling performance which
rather pleased d7666 with the theory that the best 25s are Beyer Peacock ones and the closer the numbers in a
pair the better they perform ;-) So then.....

25285 + 25286 Forden - Welshpool (powering at rear) 1J24
25285 + 25286 Welshpool - Machynlleth 1J24 departing Welshpool at 1650!
25285 + 25286 Machynlleth - Shrewsbury 1705 ex Aber starting at Mach 2J87 which departed at 1847.

M59106 Shrewsbury - Wolverhampton. 2036 departure, no way home so an overnight required!

312204 + 304039 Wolverhampton - Birmingham on 2330 additional service via Bescot.

85017 Birmingham - Crewe via Bescot on 1935 Paington - Glasgow Cent 1S39

Sunday 2/9/84

86001 Crewe - Birmingham on 0357 departure 1G00

45136 Birmingham - Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway via Leicester and Toton on 0745 Wolverhampton - York 1E75

URB 823S Trent Bristol VR (still with Leyland 501 engine!) Alfreton & MP - Derby departing at 1035

Home for some doss followed by

45029 Derby - York on 1325 ex Weston-Super-Mare 1E08
45029 York - Derby on 2120 for Plymouth 1V44

Thus endeth a rather fun and farce packed weekend, at least trains ran during the night though :-)

I've also put some views of proceedings on the Cambrian that day up at

 'Tunnel' writes...
" Spent the entire day shuttling back and forth between Cardiff and Bristol, stopping off at various points in between.
Details of the day are sketchy, but the highlight, by a country mile, was having 37158 re-engine the 0820 Brighton
  - Cardiff at Bristol Temple Meads and red - penning it. Also had that day 47291, 47441, 45139, 47340 (more red
ink used) and 33016, but I've no idea what trains they were on."

Richard Boyd writes...
"In summary moves were as follows:

 85014                Manchester - Birmingham            22.17(31/8) Manchester - Penzance (required)
 47063                Birmingham - Bristol                    23.15 Liverpool - Penzance
 47150/50036     Bristol - Plymouth                        22.17 Manchester - Penzance (47150 required)
43176/183         Plymouth - Newton Abbot           07.25 Plymouth - Paddington (both required)
 47479                Newton Abbot - Exeter               10.20 Paignton - Glasgow
 47240                Exeter - Reading                          14.50 Paignton - Paddington
 47242                Reading - Birmingham                  16.20 Weymouth - Liverpool
 86221                Birmingham - Crewe                    16.20 Weymouth - Liverpool

The day was memorable for the moral dilemma I faced at Bristol when I caught up with 50036 on the Manchester
-Penzance which I'd rejected earlier at New Street.  What was I to do?  The train was now being piloted by required
47150.  I decided to lie back and think of Loughborough!  The other memorable thing about the day was an encounter
with Butcher (remember him?) on the 16.20 Weymouth-Liverpool....

As a final thought, 47240 is now 47818 (still going) and 47242 became 47814 (just gone off lease).  Whilst I didn't
need either of these, they were still good locos to have.  If only I could have known how common they'd become!"
