Types of Diesel & Electric motivepower through Stoke.
Over the Years most of the many Diesel & Electric types have been seen in the Stoke area.
Here is a list giving brief details. Confirmation of workings or appearances in the locality by any loco types
referred to on this page as unknown / unlikely / possible or omitted
from this list most welcome especially those types long gone.

01 Unknown/Unlikely.
02 One ex BR example was at Norton Colliery C1978.
03 03086 was in the consist of the Toton - Warrington
frieght, on 19th October 1983, hauled by 40063 (on transfer from
Norwich)
04 Crewe had some allocated at one time so possible?
05 Unknown.
06 Unlikely as type usually associated with Scotland.
07 07001 was purchased by Tilsley & Lovatt,
Newstead after withdrawal by BR before being sold on into industry.
08 The standard shunter locally over the years.
In 1960 the following were allocated to 5D (Stoke, but maintained at Cockshute)
D3798 D3799 D3800 D3801 D3802 D3866 (These became 08631-08635/08699 under TOPS).
(There were 6 duties for Class 08 as late as
May 1981 - the last duty was at Longport Yard until May? 2003 and closure).
09 Three examples were based at Crewe 5D (Stoke, but
maintained at Cockshute) c1962 with D4108 D4109 D4110 (later to become
09020-22)
joining local Class 08's, D3800 D3801 D3866 (08633/4/08699).
10 Unknown.
11 Crewe had some (1960s) so possible?
12 SR allocated so very unlikely.
13 Unlikely.
14 Unknown, but thought unlikely.
15 Possible? On way to Crewe for cutting?
16 Possible? On way to Crewe for cutting?
17 8545 & 8567 Stored Cockshute HS Summer
1972. Test trains may have been worked by Derby research based
examples?
Also, at least some of the type were built at Tutbury near Derby.
20 Various freight/Passenger duties.
(Stoke crews trained on the type
in 1984, between 1985-1990s working local Coal and other freight
duties).
21 Unknown.
22 Unknown.
23 5901 worked many test trains off Derby, some came this way.
24 Numerous local freight/other duties until 24081 was withdrawn October 1980.
25 Numerous local freight/other duties until withdrawn in 1987.
26 Unknown.
27 Probably as Toton had allocation in 1960s?
28 Unknown.
29 Unknown.
30 Unknown/later became 31/0.
31 Numerous duties from late 70s - rare in daylight anyway before that.
33 Worked the paper train(1981-86) from Crewe, early
hours + rare freight/passenger appearances. FM rail examples can
still appear.
35 Unknown
37 Numerous duties from late 70s - rare before that.
40 Numerous duties over the years.
41 Prototype HST cars did appear from time to time.
42 Understood was booked duty early 1960s gen very welcome
43 Warships. Understood was booked duty early 1960s gen very welcome
43 HST P/C. Power cars built at Crewe,
late 1970's onwards, usually ran first to Derby via Stoke to collect a
set of stock.
2x regular HST turns to
Manchester introduced with new timetable starting 14/05/1984 & then
regular duties until displaced
by Voyager units in 2002?
44 Freight to/from Toton until withdrawal in 1980
45 Appeared on freight/rare on passenger until withdrawn.
46 Appeared on freight/rare on passenger until withdrawn in 1984
47 Numerous duties over the years.
48 Unknown/ later became standard 47s.
50 Appeared regularly while still based at Crewe but
rare for long spells after that, but still appeared from time to time.
52 Said to have worked a footex once - gen on this or other workings very welcome.
55 Only once pre preservation/rare visits since.
56 Rare pre 1980/two spells on local coal traffic, other appearances until withdrawal
57 Have appeared from time to time and continue to do so.
58 Have worked MGRs between Nottinghamshire and
Garston, also worked for a spell on local MGR's too, also steel turns
plus other duties from time to time.
59 Rare appearances have been known.
60 Quite regular on coal/steel until 2000 much rarer since.
66 The Bescot - Longport was an early regular turn
for class/Now the Clay, the only regular local freight turn left
usually gets one.
67 Uncommon but not unknown.
71 May have passed through on way to Crewe (confirm?)
73 Early 60s while visiting Crewe (confirm?) & 7
3 1 0 4 + 7 3 1 3 9 seen passing through behind 47701, Barrow Hill
bound on 17/12/2003.
74 May have passed through on way from Crewe after conversion (confirm?)
76 Unknown.
77 Unknown.
80 Unknown.
81 Regular until withdrawn.
82 Regular until withdrawn.
83 Regular until withdrawn.
84 Regular until withdrawn.
85 Regular until withdrawn.
86 Regular until withdrawn by Virgin Cross-County / diverted liners since.
87 Regular until withdrawn by Virgin.
89 Rare appearances en transit but no workings known under own power?
90 Regular until withdrawn by Virgin / diverted liners since.
91 May have been a test run but not 100% sure?
92 Have been noted when dragged to/from Brush Loughborough / some diverted freights more recently.
HS4000 Working a Test train, date unknown (but late 1960's).
