Q. Bob Wells asks..."5th February 1983:

At Giggleswick station waiting a service train to Leeds I noted an east bound loco hauled train comprising 25242, 87019 and 25161
(not necessarily in that order).  From my notes made at the time this was a diverted Birmingham train, the wires were down at
Hest Bank on the WCML. The weather was foul that day, hail, snow, gales.  That in effect suggests that the train had come
south from Carlisle, reversed at Carnforth and presumably having run via Hellifield would have taken the Clitheroe - Blackburn
line to Preston (or further south?).

Can anyone confirm this assumption or indeed identify the train please?

Question posted: 13/12/03
A. Peter Smith (Working Wennington box that evening) responds..."87015 brought down the OHL at Hest Bank on 1S59 0935 Euston
            - Inverness at about 1330 hrs.  47224 eventually rescued and took the damaged stock to Carlisle.   87019 on 1M27 1115
Glasgow C - Birmingham NS was trapped north of Hest Bank and returned wrong line to Carnforth behind 25242 - which
continued via Wennington, Settle Jn and Blackburn to Preston with 87019 on the rear.  Other trains diverted via the S&C
            - 40194 worked 1S39 0715  Plymouth - Glasgow - EXCEPT 1M22 1323 Glasgow C-Liverpool L.St which ran via Oxenholme,
Penrith and reversed at Carnforth with 47366 working Carnforth - Preston via Wennington, Settle Jn and Blackburn.
Single line working started at around 1900 with diesel drags."
This just leaves one unanswerd point - what did 25161 work?

Q. Greg Dash asks..."On Friday August 8th 1986 around early to mid afternoon, I was waiting at Foxton level crossing on the
Cambridge to Hitchin line.  At Foxton there is a connection into the Barrington cement works exchange sidings.  The train that
went past was a cement train going into the works from the Cambridge/Whitemoor direction but the only difference was that it
had a Class 50 on the front!  Talk about off the beaten track!!  Firstly, I want to know what engine it was and anybody else that
remembers seeing this train?  I would imagine it would have gone back to Cambridge or Whitemoor with loaded wagons?

Any help or info greatly appreciated!

Question posted: 16/08/03
A. 'The Timelord' writes..."I have been trying to get info on the class 50 at Foxton story.  I have asked a number of reliable
contacts in Anglia and none can remember such an event.

My Cambridge correspondent of the time saw 31126 leave Cambridge light engine for Foxton at 1358 on 6/8/86 and arrive back
at Cambridge with cement wagons at 1440.  31126 was one of the early non-eh refurbishments and was already in railfreight
livery in 1986.  I expect that it was 31126 that held up Mr Dash at Foxton crossing, not a class 50?"

Q. Does anyone have any information regarding north bound SW/NE Relief's on Thursday the 8th of August 1985?  Specifically, what
worked, what was believed at the time to be a 0906 Bristol - York.  This was a well bashed train, has many used this service to reach
Derby and 37008 hauling the 1030 York - Plymouth Relief.
Question posted: 15/11/03
A. 'The Buzzard' writes..."I regularly used the 0906 Bristol - York (1E51) relief as a means of getting to Derby for the 1030
York - Plymouth (1V32) relief.  On this day a rancid (though some may argue differently nowadays!) 47612 did the honours.
37008 back to New Street on 1V32  for a fester for 37036 down the bank on 1V46 1255 York-Cardiff C.  I had 50049 back from
Cheltenham on 1E37 1340 Paignton - Newcastle vice tram being withered at New St as we caught up an earlier failed train with
2x37 at the helm; a peak having failed in the Lickey vicinity.  47093 worked 1M88 0625 Poole - Man P and returned with 1V16
         1725 Man P- Padd."

Q. Richard Rooker asks..."Due to me losing my haulage book for 10th July - 28th Nov 1987, I am trying to track down a couple of
locos I had.  On 26th July and 9th & 31st August there were additional trains which were booked for class 20's - 0725 Newcastle
          - York & 1812 York - Newcastle in connection with York - Scarborough - York steam excursions.   Does anyone know which pair
worked the 1812 York - Newcastle on the 31st August?"  In further correspondence Richard stated that one of the locos may have
          been 20119.
Question posted: 20/09/03
A. Colin Williams reports..."My records show 20119 & 20144 in the MORNING of 31st August 1987 on the 07.25 Newcastle to York,
should have been the same pair on the way back."

Q.  Richard Rooker inquired... "Due to me losing my haulage book for 10th July - 28th Nov 1987, I am trying to track down a couple
of locos I had.  Did 58002 do a Wolverhampton - New Street drag during this time?"
A.   There are currently two known occasions when 58002 worked passenger turns during 1987.  on 24/10/87 it worked specials
between Corby - Kettering, then on 22/11/87, 58002 was used on Various Nuneaton drags including 1A06 0900 Wolverhampton
            - Euston dragging 86411 between Wolverhampton & Nuneaton.

            Any one with any Gen?"
A. John Bridge states..."( presumably ) 37699, it banked us on 1S19 2125 Bristol -Glasgow."

Q. David Charlesworth inquires..."I am look for more information about the Sand Trains which ran from Fen Drayton (on the old
St.Ives line) to Kings Cross until about 1991.

I am looking for any pictures of this working, in particular on the Chesterton Jt to Fen Drayton Section.  I am also trying to find
the answers to the following questions.

          Motive Power.

            1. I know that both single 37 and pairs of 31 were used on this service.  What date did the 31s replace the 37?

            2. I have heard that towards the end of the service 56 were also used, can anyone confirm this?

            Wagons

            3. The service used 16t mineral wagon in the early 1970's. by the 1980's these has been replaced by HTV Hopper wagons.
These were later replaced by bogie hopper wagons.  Can anyone give dates for the change over of wagon type?  Also can anyone
confirm the type of bogie wagon that was used towards the end?

            Service.

            4. Could some please confirm the start and finish dates of this service?"

Question posted: 29/03/03  Answer: 26/04/03

A. 'The Timelord' writes..."Motive Power:

The train was booked single class 37 until May 1983 timetable change. Last working was 37049 on 13/5/83.

From May 1983 the train was booked 31+37 in multiple but usually got 2*31 starting with 31292+201 on 16/5/83.

From January 1987 until January 1988 the train was booked a 47 on the branch then 2*31 up to Kings Cross. Last 47 to work like
this was 47355 on 21/1/88.

Train was then booked 2*31 until 8/3/91 when 31294+184 worked the train.

Train was booked a 56 from 11/3/91 when 56045 worked the train, though there were a few 2*31 workings after that.

I think that the train ran for the last time on 27/3/92 with 56035, but I would need to go through the bureaucracy more carefully to
make sure of this.

(I have fairly comprehensive gen on what hauled the train from summer 1982 onwards, which I hope will eventually get onto the
website I am developing)

Wagons:

I don’t remember the train ever using 16 ton hoppers. When I first saw the train it was HTVs with “House Coal Concentration” written
on the side. HTVs were used up to 1/88.

The train went airbraked with PBA bogie hoppers on 1/2/88.

Dates:

I first saw the train in 1969 on my way to school, when the St Ives line was still open to passengers, so it started before then!

As stated above, I think last train ran on 27/3/92.

Photographs:

I have a few photos on the branch, and more taken in the Royston area. Most of the latter are towards the end of 2*31 haulage.
Unfortunately I don’t have a scanner as yet..."

If you have photos or further details of this working, please contact us first and we will pass the details on.

Q.   Richard Rooker said..."In Sep 86 I would go out on Sundays to scratch in some Cromptons and I was just wondering if anyone
would be able to put some times to these trains.  I have given some extra notes in case they help, but the main train I am
intrested in is the one from Manchester to Whitchurch/ Wem.

           07/09/86
           45062 - Sheffield - Earls sidings - 1M74 0720 Harwich - Manchester.
           45111 - Earls sidings - Stockport - 1M74 0720 Harwich - Manchester.
Normally I would then make the next train at Manchester but because of the failure of 45062 I bailed at Stockport.
           47302 - Stockport - Whitchurch - ???? Manchester - Cardiff or Swansea.
I normally planned to do this train to Wem for the 1405 Cardiff - Crewe but if it was running a bit late it be Whitchurch.
           33039 - Whitchurch - Crewe. 1405 Cardiff - Crewe.

           21/09/86
           37069 - Sheffield - Manchester - 0720 Harwich - Manchester.
           47522 - Manchester - Wem - ???? Manchester - Cardiff or Swansea.
           33049 - Wem - Crewe - 1405 Cardiff - Crewe.
           33044 - Crewe - Stockport - 1435 Swansea - Manchester.
           86230 - Stockport - Manchester - ???? Euston - Manchester.
           86223 - Manchester - Stockport - ???? Manchester - Euston.
           31219 - Stockport - Sheffield - ???? Liverpool - Hull or Cleethorpes?
I am not too bothered with the cans on this but have put them in, in case you are able to work out what the NB 31 was on.
I do notice in the Diary pages that 31219 worked the 1145 Liverpool - Cleethorpes the following day so it must have worked
an early train back out of Hull or Cleethorpes on the 22nd.

           28/09/86
           45128 - Sheffield - Manchester - 0720 Harwich - Manchester.
On arrival at Manchester I found my usual train to Whitchurch/ Wem was starting at Crewe due to some problem so I did
a unit over to Crewe where it was held for connections.
47332 Crewe - Whitchurch - ???? Manchester - Cardiff or Swansea starting from Crewe.
           33006 Whitchurch - Crewe - 1405 Cardiff - Crewe.
           47451 Crewe - Manchester - 1435 Swansea - Manchester.
A.   I remember the Sunday Wem leap very well and must have done it at least half a dozen times during the summer of 86.  The
trains involved were 1V13 1500 Manchester Picc - Swansea which made 1M84 1405 Cardiff - Crewe and was a plus 23 at Wem,
but if 1V13 was on time or you could always risk the 'Man of Steel' move which was the minus 3 at Shrewsbury!

On the 21/09/86 47522 must have been 1V13 as above.  I looked up times for 1M86 ( 1435 ex Swansea ) and noted was
           booked 1935 arriving at Manchester.

Only two electric hauled turns were booked to depart after that, only one of them to Euston, which must put 86223 on the
1A43 2000 to Euston and 31219 on something after that.

The 1E35 1852 Lime St - Hull was booked only six minutes behind 1A43, so 31219 was most probably working this train.
There was also a 1E37 to Hull a hour later, so really depends on how long you hung around.

I was out and in the area on the 28/09/86  and fully intended doing the Wem leap especially as it would be the last time
1M84 would get a Crompton.  However, having arrived at Piccadilly we found that 1V13 appeared to have been caped!  If
I remember correctly, the loco and stock for 1V13 usually came up from Crewe ECS.  Don't have records of anything
exciting having been quoted for 1V13, so suspect a EH 47 must have failed before the ECS move and 47332 was a late substitute.
Booked dep time for 1V13 off Crewe was 1556.

We ended up on the 1520 Manchester - Harwich with 45128 to Sheffield and straight back with 47417 on 1S85 1503 Notts -
Glasgow.  Remember not being best pleased by the none appearance of 1V13 out of Manchester to say the least!

Q.   Jason Warner asks :   "  Which Class 20 locomotives didn't make it to Skegness on passenger trains?  (Or conversely which ones
            did)."
Question posted: 24/02/01
A.    Not having had time to go through all my records as yet, I've come up with the following list of  locos that I believe have visited
           Skegness.  20002/004-007/013/016/019/022/025/026/029/030/032/039-042/047/048/053/055-057/060/063/065/071-073/075/077/078

workings that I am aware of from 1982/85 and 88 plus others that I definitely remember working at other times.
Mark Widdison writes..."From my records the following didn't make it to Skegness:
          20008,009,011,012,015,017,024,027,028,035,036,044,046,049,057,061,062,074,076,079,080,

A total of 172 have made it to Skegness."
Pip Dunn adds..."From my records which I not only believe to be correct, but also fairly comprehensive, the following Class 20s
have been to Skegness on passenger trains, and includes a few listed on your site as not having been so....

            20001-009, 20013/014/016/019/020, 20022/023/025/026, 20028-035, 20037-045,
            20047-056, 20058-060, 20062-078, 20080-085, 20087/088, 20090-092, 20094-099,
            20101-108, 20110-115, 20117/118/120/121/124/125, 20127-136, 20138-153,
            20155-199, 20208-210, 20212-219, 20227

also, 20225 has been there as 20905 on the weedkiller...

plus 20021 and 20057 have both worked Skeg trains but failed (or their partners failed) and never actually made it there!
Also, just for info, 20226 has also been to Boston, LD, to collect 20140 which had been dumped there after failing on a returning
         Skeg-Sheffield."

We've got partial details re this train outwards.  The code I have is 1Z12 with a  08:30 time @ BNS.

A.    David Downer "I travelled on this train on the return journey (the train orginated from Shrewsbury with a 47 and it was only later in

Q.    Martin Reeve asks..." Does anybody know what worked the 14.13 Portsmouth - York forward from New Street on 05/08/85?"
It may also be worth reporting what worked the 14:00 Hull - Brighton into New St, as this was usually the same loco.
A.    Gary Stratford replies..."Not too sure why I did this move but I had 31442 on the 1413 Portsmouth H - York (1E31) forward from
Birmingham to Burton." He continues..."A good day with a double score pair 31166/31162 from New St to Derby on 1E51 0906
Bristol-York relief for required 47015 back to New St on 1V32 1030 York-Penzance.   Also later, required 47286 from New St
to Derby on 1E25 0918 Penzance-Leeds.  The day finished with a New St-Coventry travelcard leap with dud 47287 on 1V16 1725
Man Picc-Paddington. I scored it the previous Sat morning on the FO 1O29 2232 Leeds-Portsmouth ex New St."
Q.    Martin Reeve also asks..."Also, I had 45070 Wolves - New Street on 10/08/85, possibly heading towards Plymouth, but
what train was it on?  It was sometime in the afternoon as I came back from ZC open day to Wolves on 86210 13.10 Lancaster
            - BNS, then forward from BNS on 31421/425 on 16.10 BNS - Norwich.  Any help appreciated."
Our own notes for Saturday 10/08/85 show the peak arriving with a service from Llandudno, but with no time or code.
Steve Marshall then added ... "I travelled behind it (45070) in the morning from BNS to Wolves.  The train was 1D23 0909 BNS
-Llandudno which I think was a booked service train at that time."
Did 45070 then work something down the bank?
A.    Having checked all this out, can confirm 1D23 was indeed a booked turn with an expected return working running as 1G54,
dep Llandudno 1238 with an 1553 arrival at New st.  1G54 should have been about 40 mins behind the 1310 ex Lancaster.
With the above information and judging by my own moves and other service details recored at the time, it now looks extremely
likely that the unidentified service was 1G54.

Q.    Paul Lemon writes..."On this weekend's ( 08/09/01 ) update you have added 31166 & 31233 working from Norwich to
            Birmingham on 27th August 1983 ( With 1M76 1557 Yarmouth - Birmingham New St) .  Traction Magazine (Feb 2000)
records 31166 & 31151 worked 0608 Peterborough to Great Yarmouth.  Whilst it's not impossible, I would have
thought it unlikely the pairings were swapped at Norwich."

A.    The item in Traction Magazine detailed above relates to an article which appeared in a earlier edition, namely that of October 1999.
This, by Mr Peter Hall, contained details of the Summer Saturday trains between Yarmouth & the North.  This stated that on
27th August 1983, a solo 31151 was reported as working the 1E73 09:35 Yarmouth - Leeds forward from Norwich.  If  both the
above items are correct ( and I have no reason to believe they are not ), it looks like the pair did split at Norwich.

David Garnett adds..."The gen sheets for West Yorkshire,  show 31151 on the Yarmouth to Leeds (did need it at the time but was
on 40135 to Aberystwyth),  and also the Yarmouth portions been allocated to 31110 & 31233,  but no mention of 31166?
Hopes this helps but probably only deepens the mystery."
 Q.   The above being the case,  what loco(s) worked the 1G14 07:22 Derby - Birmingham NS and then the 1E64 10:15 Birmingham N
            - Yarmouth across to Norwich on the 27th August 1983 and does anyone recall other Summer Saturday pairs of 31's splitting and
            re-reforming at Norwich?

Q.   Greg Hewitt writes..."My father was the driver of the very last 506 from Hadfield to Glossop.  On 7th December 1984.
I understand there was a 506 group, at the time ,but that this is now defunct.  My father tells me that audio tapes were
made of him as he drove the train also some anecdotes of his steam days.  I am desperately looking for  copies of these
tapes as he is currently unwell."

Q.   On Sunday the 16th February 1986 saw the dragging of electric hauled & EMU services Between Liverpool Street & Ilford or
Romford Paul Lemon has informed me that at least 37055, 37057, 31311 & 2 unknown Class 47s were involved, but can
anyone pin locos to  individual services?

Liverpool St-Ipswich dragging 312796 to Ilford for the unit forward to Romford. Back into the Street from there with 37055
dragging 312781 on 2C21 1255 Clacton - Liverpool Street.  On arrival at the Street, 37057 backed onto the other end to form
1Y10 1530 Liverpool St - Ipswich dragging 312781 to Ilford.  I then continued again on the unit to Romford for 31311 back to

Q.   A friend of ours, a haulage basher since the early 80's, only used to record the date, loco number and points between which
he had the locos.  Now he would like to find out service details!  In the table below are a selection of some of his  moves.
We have already attempted to  identify a few of the workings but can you help identify any more?

Q.    Does anyone have any gen re the 1E34 09:15 SO Manchester P - Yarmouth from 1981?  We think loco changes usually took place at
Sheffield and Norwich during that year.  The only gen we have so far concerns the  involvement of 37102 (6/6) & 37128 (1/8)
presumably working the Sheffield - Norwich leg (But confirmation would be welcome).  We would be interested to receive any
gen on this service, to allow a list to appear on this site, but we are especially keen to find out what worked this train on the
            15th of August 81.

Q. Over the Spring Bank holiday, late may 82, in addition to the usual relief's as you would have expected, a large number of trains were
run in connection with Papal visits to a number of venues including; Wembley, Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, York and Cardiff.
These special arrangements included, on Monday 31st, a  half hourly Blackpool - Manchester V service with all trains hauled.

Q.   In response to a request from Scott Borthwick  :  Does anyone have any gen on the special `FLOWEREX` trains that ran to
the Spalding Tulip festival each May?  In this instance we would be interested to hear details of any trains from the 80's
including those worked by EH locos and even those formed of units.  Also, does anyone have details of what happened to
the stock, where did it stable?

Now see the new Spalding Flowershow Specials page for details of these workings.

Q.   Gary Blyth asks  :  "  On Saturday 6th August 1983, I was returning from a "lads" holiday in Weymouth and from Bristol I caught
47257 back to Birmingham New Street on what I believe was the 10:30 Penzance - Newcastle. I duly fell asleep until woken with jolt
at Bromsgrove when the "bankers" were placed on the rear to assist up the lickey. I witnessed the thrash behind me but to this
day have never had the locos confirmed (2X37).  Soon after I asked the question to one of my colleagues and he thought they
            could have been 37284 & 37298 but wasn't sure."

Q.  The 1982 Cambrian services listing on this site shows the 1J24 1010 SO Euston - Aberystwyth as hauled by 25146+25123 on 31/7
,but a fresh report gives the locos as 25146+25279 upon departure from Birmingham New Street.  Is this report erroneous or was
25279 replaced by 25123 at Wolverhampton or Shrewsbury for some reason?
Question posted: 06/01/01
A.    It would appear that the report of 25279's involvement on this date was in error.  Alan Lea writes... "I can confirm that 25146 + 25123
did 10.10 Euston Aber on 31/7/82 As I had them Birmingham to Wolverhampton. I arrived in Birmingham off 47328 on the 08.23
York to Tenby went to Wolves on them and went back to Birmingham on 86252 on 09.00 Llandudno to Euston."

Q.    Can anyone tell me where the following list of services, all from 1981, were booked to change locos?

         1E27 09:58 Weymouth - Leeds
         1E69 10:55 Weymouth - Leeds
         1O11 07:10 Bradford - Weymouth
         1E28 07:57 Weymouth - Bradford

Question posted: 06/01/01
A.  The following details have now been received.  David Davis writes..."I have found your info in 1981 loco hauled travel as follows:

07.57 Weymouth - Bradford was a CD 47 Weymouth to Birmingham for a 46 forward throughout. Run round at Leeds
09.58 Weymouth - Leeds BS 47 Weymouth to Birmingham for unknown loco forward to Leeds
            10.55 Weymouth - Bradford TE 47 until 26.09.81 and a CD 47 on the 03.10.81 last week
07.50 Leeds - Weymouth Unknown Leeds to Birmingham (probably the outward diagram to the loco that worked forward from Brum
on the 09.58 from Weymouth poss a 45 diagram) and BS 47 Birmingham to Weymouth
            07.10 Bradford - Weymouth TE 47 Throughout
All above services avoided Reading and the 07.10 Bradford  - Weymouth and 10.55 Weymouth - Bradford also avoided Birmingham"
New pages listing with known details of these services have now been added to this site and can be reached from the links above.
Thanks also to Richard Boyd who provided similar details.

Q.   Could the appearance of 27059 on the 1B67 1832 Carstairs - Edinburgh, (Portion off 1S61 0734 ex Poole) on 3rd May 87 be the last
ever appearance of a Class 27 on a scheduled service, or does anyone know of a later working?
Question posted: 06/01/01
A.   Tim Proudman writes..."No, there were several workings after this day. According to 'Circuit'  (the excellent magazine once
published by the Class 27 Loco Group), the last working was 27066 on July 12th 1987, when it worked the 1445 Glasgow Central
           - Carlisle forward from Kilmarnock."Question answered: 22/01/01
