East Anglian Ranger 79

Two account of East Anglian Ranger's from around Easter 1979.

Wednesday 11/4/79.

The 0830 peak hour restriction meant the first inbound train was the 0841 to the Street with the atmospheric teak interior of 306 unit 089. 37050 on the 0936 Liverpool St-Cambridge was the first loco of the trip with a morning session on the Audley End-Bishops Stortford circuit. At least there were no worries re the desperate Bishops Stortford footbridge grip with a rover in hand. 37022 to March, for 31237 onto Norwich with the 1236 from Birmingham. SF steam heat 47’s then a bonus with 37049 on the 1944 Norwich-Liverpool St back to Shenfield.

A heatwave was developing with Colchester basking in 80 degrees plus, so the boilers were off. Easter Ipswich-Liverpool St reliefs got nb 31212,37014 and 47117. The late afternoon/evening Cambridge circuit included the rare skinhead 31133 on an 1820 Cambridge-Liverpool St relief.

The local bashers were rejoined on 37014 on the lightly loaded 0924 Liverpool St-Ipswich Relief. They advised on the desperate Norwich 03 haulage move. This was to hide in the bogs, pray it was just a pull back and not a trip to the carriage sidings and claim a "touch of diarrhoea" if challenged! 37037 was taken forward to Stowmarket for a pub move. Walking back from the pub other pubs had drunks crashed out in car parks, beaten up yobs etc…country boys. Nb 31276 on the 1624 Liverpool St-Ipswich Relief was the beast of the day; the loco number was also etched onto the headcode box of this Thornaby machine

Saturday 14/4/79

A normal day out with 37014 for the third time of the trip. The heat wave was continuing so there were many tourists looking around the University grounds and punters on the river. On the return journey we leapt at Audley End. In a first venture from the station we found a tiny village with a nice church but the sole pub was yet to open that evening despite it nearing 1900. This was to the disgust of some American who had strayed from his many compatriots in Cambridge. To my immense joy and with a ritualistic leap to the concern of the train crew and girlfriend my last boilered SF 37’0 took us back to the Street in 37051 on the 1732 from King’s Lynn.

Sunday 15/4/79

A late start and a surprise in a 306 unit straying onto an Alleged Chelmsford-Liverpool St early morning service. New 47’s in abundance today then the anticipated plus 90 at Thetford on the Norwich-Birmingham goyle leap. This eventually became a worrying plus 10 after a swing bridge failure at Trowse.

Monday 16/4/79

Met up with the local duff bashers on 47018 on the 0930 Liverpool St-Norwich which they remained on for mileage whilst I leapt at Colchester expecting to meet up with them again on the Harwich-Peterborough. A rapid change of plan here when 37262 arrived on a Wolverhampton-Clacton ADEX. The central headcode boxed SF specimens such as 262 were rarer because of their virtual exclusion from Cambridge line services because of Clapton tunnel clearance restrictions.

37262 was then taken on new track to Clacton for Clacton unit 612 straight back to the street. Compo stock, quality ride and fast running made my first Clacton unit ride a memorable one. The evening Cambridge power saw some further variety with 31108 on the Cambridge-Liverpool St relief.

A 12 car 306 beast in 052/077/078 took me to the Street for non required 47’s in abundance until newie 47009 produced on the 1142 Norwich-Liverpool St. The Cambridge evening rush hour followed where new goyles and syphons were still appearing despite it being the last day of the rover.

The rover finally ended with a noisy run behind 37102 on the 2008 Cambridge-Liverpool St.

East Anglian Ranger.     (12 to 18/04/1979)   by  Andrew Pullar.
I was intrigued to discover within the pages of your website an article from Nick Ross describing an Anglian Rover bash around Easter 1979. As I was doing
the same thing I thought it of interest to compare weeks. We even shared one or two train journeys. When 37262 turned up at Colchester we probably shared
the same thought - MY LORDS!!! I'M HAVING SOME OF THAT. As will be apparent from the list of moves I was somewhat preoccupied with clearing
required passenger track rather than maximising haulages. Some dubious moves ensued including diesel units on an overnight fester between Shenfield
and Liverpool Street.

Good start to the Rover with nine required locos and haulage over the Ilford flyover with boiler isolated 31212. Having travelled on the Toffeeapple Farewell Railtour on 22/10/1977 I was certainly not expecting to fall onto 31017 enjoying a last fling up the main line.

Tinsley no boiler Goyle 31276 was the treat for the Friday in between clearing a bit more required line. Only six required locos in the book in between the line bashing but the Boat Trains were well worth the price of the Anglia Rover.

Saturday 14 April 1979

Having tickets for the DAA Suburban Venturer meant I had to be south of the Thames by mid morning. Just enough time for a couple of moves out of Cambridge before suffering 8TC to Alton and Windsor amongst other places. What I wasn't expecting was another Toffeeapple (even if it was dud off the previously mentioned railtour).
The evening was spent knocking off some more required track in Essex suburbia before the first of four Adex workings were boarded. I had somehow got hold of a special working notice and reasoned that if I covered these trains I might get haulage that would otherwise not be around. Thus Saturday evening found me leaping at Barking onto the returning Adex from Barnstaple to Shoeburyness. The only regret was I had to leap at Southend as there were no trains back from Shoeburyness. Also the station staff at Barking had spotted me leaping on the train and were intent on throwing me off. They thought better of it when some of the passengers in the train insisted I stay on. Those were the days when I had some charisma.

Sunday 15 April 1979

Can someone kindly explain to me what I was doing for most of this particular day. I cannot believe I was bashing a class 116 cart into the Street for a 105 back out as the juice was switched off for engineering work. The Adex was dud and I only fell on three required haulages. I seem to have spent most of the day carting myself around yet more required track though it has to be said Clacton units were somewhat rateable.
