Q. Gary S
says... "I have just been loaned a special traffic
notice (W1) covering the August Bank Holiday weekend of August
1984.
Anyone any ideas if the following drags
took place and the power involved out of curiosity (!)?
On Saturday 25th August 1984 the following trains were quoted as being dragged between Euston station and WN97 signal:
1G11 2325 Sat Euston to Wolverhampton
1F53 2350 Sat Euston to Liverpool L St
On Sunday 26
August 1984 the following trains were quoted as being dragged
between WN58 signal and EN64/65 signal:
1A01 0030
Manchester P to Euston 31116 dragged 86247 Willesden - Camden info c/o Alan Baylis
1M09 2210 Sat Glasgow C to Euston
1M69 2200 Sat Motorail Stirling to Euston
1A04 0115 Holyhead to Euston
1M10 2215 Sat Glasgow C to Euston
The following
were quoted as being dragged between Euston station and WN97 signal:
1F53 2350 Sat Euston to Liverpool L St
1F90 0700 Euston to Liverpool L St (Relief) 86323 to Stafford and was NOT dragged out of Euston info c/o Alan Baylis
1F90 was an unadvertised Relief service ran
each Sunday during the summer of 1984. Look here for details.
On Bank Holiday Monday 27 August 1984 the following trains were quoted
as being dragged from Willesden WN125 signal and diverted from Wembley
Central via Low Level Goods Line to Willesden WL Jn:
1A01 0030 Manchester P to Euston
1M09 2310 Sun Glasgow C to Euston
1M11 2320 Sun Glasgow C to Euston
1M04 0115 Holyhead to Euston
1M10 2215 Sun Glasgow C to Euston
1M16 1930 Sun Inverness to Euston
1M15 2030 Sun Inverness to Euston
and
1G11 0010 Euston to Wolverhampton was quoted as being dragged from
Euston to Willesden WN86 signal and diverted from Willesden WL Jn via
Low Level Goods Line to Wembley Central.
In addition to 1A02 0235 Euston
to Bletchley being diesel hauled (25201/25239 quoted here) on the Sunday morning, 2A23 0350 Euston to Bletchley
was also quoted for diesel haulage on Monday morning.
"It was 31149 that did the booked diesel power on the 2A23 0350 Euston-Betchley throughout early on 270884" info c/o Nick Ross.

Q. Jason Ralphs asks..."Could anyone help me with some info I am missing from my moves
from the early eighties with dates and train details?
I did
37300 from Birmingham New St to Bristol Temple Meads on a late
night departure from Birmingham New St some time in 1984 or 1985?"
A.
Q. Dave W
says..."I had 31408 + 47575 on a passenger train in1981 (I think it was
in the Yorkshire area), but I have lost my haulage book for that period
and I would
like to know what train it was and why and when the 31 was put on the
front?
A.
Q. Gary S says..."Following
on from the famous Bletchley - Coventry dragging on 1st September 1985,
they were supposed to be at it again the following
Sunday
(8th) but this time south of Bletchley in connection with Engineering
operations at Hemel Hempstead South Jn and Watford North Jn.
The following trains were quoted as being dragged from Bletchley:
1O52 2301 Sat Manchester P - Gatwick Airport (to Willesden WN34 Signal)
1A01 0030 Manchester P - Euston
1M11 2205 Sat Glasgow C - Euston
1A04 0115 Holyhead - Euston
1M69 2200 Sat Motorail Stirling - Euston
1M10 2215 Sat Glasgow C - Euston
1M14 2200 Sat Stranraer - Euston
1M16 1930 Sat Inverness - Euston
In
addition, 1A02 0235 Euston - Bletchley was quoted as diesel hauled
for balancing purposes.
Given the
events of the previous weekend maybe somebody took an interest in these
workings. Personally, I wasn't out that day which was unusual
so I must have been suffering
from major cash exhaustion but have no recollection of these workings
at all.
Can anyone
confirm the exact date or the power involved for the above dragging
assuming, of course, that it did indeed occur?"
A.
Q. Gary S
says... "A
further trawl through some STN's revealed some potential for some
interesting workings from a local (well local to me!) perspective.
Anyone know
what worked the following:
Sunday 3rd June 1984, 1O52 2305 (Sat) Manchester P-Gatwick Airport was
due to be dragged between Bletchley and Willesden with a light diesel
movement from
Bescot to cover. This was also due to be repeated on
Sunday 10th June with again a light diesel movement from Bescot quoted
to drag between Bletchley and
Willesden WN34 signal.
Sunday 15th July was a very busy morning for charter traffic through
Leighton Buzzard. Out of curiosity, anyone know the power and
who these ran for:
1Z68 0710 Milton Keynes-Portsmouth Hbr & return (0724 dep
LB/2203 rtn) with loco change quoted at Mitre Bridge (0821/0833
outward, 2050/2102 return)
1Z09 0723 Rugby-Yarmouth &
return (0817 dep LB/2221 rtn) Through diesel with ECS ex Oxley
1T05 0730 Euston-Welshpool & return (0821 dep LB/2128 rtn). The
outward was supposed to be dragged from Bletchley (dep 0834) to
Wolverhampton via
Northampton and Nuneaton! The return was due to be
dragged from Wolverhampton to Nuneaton.
And finally ... on Tuesday 17th July, 1T05 0857 Leighton
Buzzard-Kidderminster & 1505 return with loco change quoted at
Coventry (0944/0954 outward, 1600/1613 return)
Any info on
the above trains gratefully received to cure my curiosity."
A.
Q. Gary S says... "Is there anyone out there who could supply me scanned timings pages (or photocopies or an unwanted copy) of the following:
Sunday 13th May 1984 from Special Traffic Notice W1 No. 20 (12/05/84 to 18/05/84) and
Monday 20th August 1984 to Friday 24th August from Special Traffic Notice M No. 34 (18/08/84 to 24/08/84).
If so please contact me via the webmaster." NOTE : If you can help with scans of the above... please send to Clayhead and he will forward them on to Gary, otherwise,
as requested by Gary, contact us, and we'll pass your details onwards .

Q. Simeon Gaskell is looking for a date of a Liverpool trip...
"I am trying to pin down a date for a trip I made when a kid to
Liverpool Lime Street, around March/April 1982. (Definite limits are between
23rd Feb and 29th May).
It was probably a Saturday but could be a
weekday if in the school holidays. I was there I guess between about 09.30 and
15.00 and photographed 45111 ariving
on a passenger service first, then
leaving on another passenger service. Then 87007 running on to its train, then
40145 on the blocks next to 85026, though I
don't know for sure if either had
arrived on passenger services. Finally 47404 was seen and 47402 photographed
stabled between platforms.
Any help most gratefully received."
A.
Q. Steve Lawton has a couple of queries relating to excursions from back in the 1970's...
"I was on a Adex from Burton to Rhyl one Sunday sometime in 1974/5 and I have some questions connected with this.
On our way out the North Wales Coast we passed a number of DMU vehicles on fire in a siding which IIRC were
somewhere in the Chester area. Does anybody have a date for this as it would possibly identify the train
that we were on. I think that the train we were on was hauled by a pair of type 2's. Hope somebody can help?"
&
"Did a Burton - Blackpool Mystex in 1975 run formed of MK2 AB stock. I believe that it was 45026 and was late
September of that year. Can this be confirmed?"
A.
Q. Mike Kerry would like to know... "Time and destination for the following Manchester Victoria area mail trains in 1987
3J00
3J20
3J05
And In 1986
3J10
And In 1985
Headcode for 18.05 Blackpool - Man Vic?"
A.
Q. James Blair
asks... "Does anyone have any information as to what hauled a Brighton
to Harrogate Chartex on 20/1/86. It was routed via Clapham Jct and the
Midland Main Line. Does anyone have any record of what hauled this
service and the return Chartex on 22/1/86 please?"
A.
Q. Pete Drury
asks... "On Tuesday 23/8/1983 I Caught 1S92? from Preston dep 0025,
previous nights Euston-Stranraer, 81005 to Carlisle, 47555 from
Carlisle.At Girvan
the 47 slipped to a stand and was assisted in the rear by a pair of
class 20's, does anybody know which 20's ?"
A.
Q. Chris Cowley says... "When I was 11 on our way home from holiday, my dad took me to Tiverton Jct for an hour and we saw the following
pass onexpresses:
45055/060,46023,47033/503, 50005/24/42/49 & HST's 253018/040/043.
Can anyone help me to
find out the DATE it was that day? It was a hot afternoon in August
1983 I think.
Saturday 13th August 'may' be a possible data as
have managed to find workings for three of the above locos, 45055
(1V67), 46023 (1E22) and 50042(Newquay-Padd) all of which would have
been through Tiverton Jct within a hour or two. Can anyone come
up with a better match?
A.
Q. Neil Dodd would like some help filling in the missing service details from his haulage records. Any help appreciated.

Q. Jason Warner recalls the following :
"I looked though my old books and can say that on the Monday 24th March 1986 56040 worked Nuneaton-St Pancras and return.
That day they
diverted WCML expresses down the MML -noted in order that day at
Kettering were:
47446/47119/31145/31427/25205/45129/56040/45145/31110/45106/45132/45117."
Does anyone out
there have any further details of the disruption to the WCML on this
day?
Can you ID any of
the services worked by the locos above, or do you know of others?
Nick Ross as added the following comments... "High winds had brought the wires down at South Kenton,
Roade and also Rugby plus other points South of Rugby, Believe very little Southern WCML
dragging just diversions to Padd and Pancras. A 58 is also claimed to have dragged to Pancras.
By mid afternoon of 240386 limited through electric haulage of services to/from had resumed.."

Q. Brian Sherrington asks...
A picture I took of 26046 at
Newcastle working 5G19 2002 Newcastle to Craigentinny ECS on 16th
November 1984.
There was a
stopping train from Edinburgh to Newcastle that left Waverley at
around 1700-1715 calling at most stations arriving at Newcastle at
1930ish.
(2E19 1718 Edinburgh - Newcastle recoded 1E19 from Dunbar according to 1H84) Did 26046 work this on 16th November 1984?

Q. 'Ned'
says... Remember those gen sheets listing summer services and headcodes
that were created and passed around, especially during the late 80's?
I had one such
sheet from 1989, so I know at least one such sheet existed for that
year, but I have lost my copy somewhere over time, and now that
I'm
finally getting around to peacing together my old moves from scraps of
paper, I'm struggling a bit for headcodes from that year
especially. I've
found quite a few codes here on 'Timewarp' while 'UK Headcodes' as also been of help, but would be very greatful if anyone has a copy of a
1989
sheet, could they possibly scan it in and pass on to me via this site?
A.
Q. Alister Betts says...
25/8/79 did a Brokenhurst – Chester ADEX – was 33103 to/from Mitre Bridge Junction. Had an
86 to Crewe and a 40 to Chester, which I believe to have been 40084 ( other records show that
it should have been at CD at the right time). Not sure if we had the same 40 back to Crewe.
The return descended into chaos with our roarer failing somewhere around Stafford, I recall
a 47/3 being involved and also a loco change at Northampton, bizarrely….. can anyone help
fill the gaps?
A.
Note : The webmaster suggests that to answer the next three queries, scan the relevant documents at 200dpi and save in TIF file format.
email the scans to us and we'll then pass them on.
Q. Nigel Curtis asks...
If anyone has any details of the Severn Valley diesel gala for October 1989? I am after the timetable for the Severn Valley Diesel Gala on Saturday 14th October
1989. I need a copy
of the timetable along with which locos worked which services, my copy
having been lost in several house moves. I know the locos were
D9000, D9019 (I think), D7633, D100, D1013 & D1062.
A.
Q. Nigel Curtis asks...
"I am after times for the Severn Valley diesel gala for a Saturday in October
1987, locos included two Westerns, two Deltics, D100 and a class 25,
can anyone email me the timetable along with which service each loco
worked plus the identities of the locos, the timetable I had has been

John Ditcham says... "
I don't have the timetable for the 10th October 1987 diesel gala, but know at least the following workings:

D1013 11:42 Bnorth - Kidd
D1062 13.00 Kidd - Bnorth
27 059 13.54 Highley - Kidd

Q. Nigel Curtis asks...
"I am after train times, services and headcodes for Exeter St Davids for
the weekend - Friday 26/09/86 and Saturday 27/09/86 for the overnight
services between 22:00 on 26/09 and 09:00 on 27/09 including parcels,
TPO's, ECS, local and holidaymaker services, extracts from a working
timetable would help. I spent the night on the station photographing
most services but failed to record which service was which!"

Q. Tony Dew would like to know if....
There are any istances of
Steam hauled specials running between London King's Cross - York in
1980 (or a year or so either side) ?
A.
Q. David Swann says..."Overnight
E.C.M.L. 'Heavy' Class 47 hauled passenger/sleeper/motorail trains from
Scotland to London were diverted(due to engineering work
and ran
via the coast from Newcastle through Sunderland,Hartlepool and on to
Eaglescliffe before joining the main line again at Northallerton, rumour
had it at the
time that
due to 'wheel slip' trains were piloted between
Newcastle+Eaglescliffe, from memory at the time 37072/37167/37075 were
mentioned amounts others. The
train that
seemed to be in question at the time was 1E43 the 1920
Aberdeen-KX I know for a fact that this was normally loaded
to about 16 with Mk.3 sleepers,
guvs+Mk2 opens.
One
Sunday during the winter months(probably 1984) I did my normal Sunday
afternoon move; 14.42 Nottingham - Glasgow (scotch) to Sheffield
To cover the
two steam
heat diagrams (1O92 Leeds -Portsmouth & 1E08 B/ham-Leeds)
both steaming Peaks that day, on my arrival at Sheffield rumours were
rife that 37167
had
piloted a 'generator' on E43 that morning between Newcastle
-Eaglescliffe, so much so the following Saturday night I decided to
check this out, early
evening I
travelled from my home in Nottingham to Newark, then on to York and
eventually Newcastle (via an HST and a 47 on a late 'pennine') after
what
was quite
a long night on the beer and a bit of a 'fester 'back at Central
station I learned that 1E43 was 30 'down' 47144 was waiting at the end
of the platform,
I thought
this is it 'the pilot' I spoke to the driver he said due to loss of
power on E43 it would be piloted to York which it was, 47402 approached
slowly
and both 47's ran to York where 47474 took over."
Can anyone
confirm if there were booked pilot duties, when ECML turns were
diverted, and if so, suggest dates when the above may have occurred?

Q. Brendan Kilgallon
asks... "In
the 1980's ? we travelled on a pair of green? 26's from Inverness to
Kyle and back. I think 26001 and 26007. It was the first
Sunday diesel
hauled train and made it into the Scotsman. Could someone please
confirm the date and engines used."
Can't be 1980's as no green Class 26s on the mainline, 26001 & 26007
repainted green in July & August 1992. The pair made their passenger
debut
working 1Z47 0835 Edinburgh - Oban special (ADEX?) and they were
withdrawn August 1994, so must the working can be narrowed down to that
two year period?
A.
Q. Kevin Daniel
requires details of HST formations recorded on the Western Region
during 1976/77/78. Observations of HST formations (power cars and
trailers) in
service, on test/crew training/delivery runs, accompanied by an
accurate date and location would be welcome. Identification of any
service
working would be a
bonus. Observations of formations or "loose" vehicles on depot or works
are also of use. Kevin is willing to negotiate payment for
such information and can be contacted at hstdaniel@tiscali.co.uk

Q. Mick asks... "Does anybody have the info for Sunday 20th Jan 1991 Pennine workings.
I travelled
from York on the 1805? Newcastle - Liverpool which was 47443, but
would like to Know what went north that evening as I have
no account what I got to York on..."
Bigbird says..."47422
is a possibility but cannot guaranteed. I had it on 1M10 1020 NCL-LIV
which after release at Lime St. may have done 17xx LIV-NC
which makes 1M48 1807 NCL-LIV at York. (47443)."

Q. Daniel Pearson asks..."Could anybody tell me any of the locos that worked the following on 10th August 1984:
07:45 1M70 Cardiff - Crewe
11.45 1M84 Cardiff - Crewe
10.03 1V04 Crewe - Cardiff
Any info for any of this day would help."

Q. Mick asks..."Anybody
know the route a Euston-Halifax charter took on 27th October 1990. I
believe it was a Rugex (GB v Aus) 86210 took it to Nuneaton then
47846 the rest of the way. I would like to work out the mileage
Nuneaton-Leeds."

know when a headboard, bearing any of these names, was *first* used?"
A.
Q. 'SS' askes..."I'm trying to find which locos worked the Poole - Glasgow/Edinburgh Sleepers on 29/05/90 Northbound and 30/05/90 Southbound.
No doubt a 47 for an electric forward from New
Street, but which ones please if possible?
I also remember a change of locos after reversal at
Glasgow Central too. Is this correct?
I seem to recall it attached to a service
ex-Plymouth at New Street before going up the WCML. What might have
done the shunting there?
Were the headcodes 1M87 and 1S19 for the Northbound
journey?"

following dates: 16/05/91, 20/05/91, 03/06/91 & 11/06/91. On 11/06/91 we got off at Kensington Olympia and
worked a class 47 back to Brighton. I didn't record
the locos numbers and now all these years later would love to
know which class 47 they were. I know it's a long
shot but maybe someone out there bashed these trains?

arriving on
passenger trains between 11.45am and 12.15pm - I was on a southbound -
possibly Deltic hauled - rake of MK1 coaches, I was only 8 months old - but
my elder brother thinks we had 55010 up - and perhaps a 47 on the way
back.
This is the only loco I've had that I don't have the number for and it
would
be so good to complete my lifetime haulage list!

Q. Graeme Salt asks the following :."
1. Can anyone confirm or deny that 40034 worked the
Manchester - Harwich boat train between Piccadilly and Sheffield on
either 09/04/80 or 10/04/80?
2. 46056 worked a NE - SW service
on 25/04/81, possibly 1V67 06.37 Leeds - Paignton. Can anyone confirm
the train, and how far it worked?
If
it was V67, the diary pages have 45073 going forward from Gloucester.
Also out that day was:
50019 1O18 14.20 Exeter - Waterloo

Q. Colin Brooks asks... "On Saturday 22nd November 1986 - Which 47 worked the folowing services - may be same 47
1M14 1140 Poole - Liverpool Lime Street between Poole - Reading &
1O03 0710 Liverpool Lime Street - Poole (from Reading to Poole)
Also can anyone identify what 47 616 worked on that day?
Also:
31 222 worked 0710
Lowestoft - Londo Liverpool Street (either a Wednesday /
thursday) in November 1983. Can anyone suggest an exact date?
Q. Does
anyone have track plans of Stoke Cockshute sheds (after the mid
70's) that they could scan for possible use on a planned webpage
for this site (and a modling progect?)
Also scans of photos of the depot from that period (or earlier) for use
on the site or otherwise? Any details of locos recorded 'on shed'
would also be welcome.

Q. Richard Barrack asks... "In the '70s, particularly the 1970-75 period, block oil (or some sort
of petroleum) trains passed
through Knottingley on the line to
and from Goole. They were often 100t
bogie tankers
and had company branding such as (if memory serves) Gulf, Fina and
maybe Texaco.
They were
usually I think, class 37 hauled though some may also have been 47
hauled. My curiosity was reawakened by the article on tanker
trains in the Feb
07 Rail Express which, despite showing refineries and distribution
points, fails to answer my question "where was this flow of fuel going
from and to?"
I think by the way, the tank trains turned south via Knottingley East
and South junctions towards
Doncaster, probably heading (or originating from) the
Immingham area.
But where were they working to. Was it Hull? And what was the purpose?"

Q. Is there anyone out there reading this who was was on the RESL Scottish railrover that week 8th-15th August 1982 who can confirm the itinery/dates for the
loco hauled sections?

Q. Brian Kirby asks... "In
Dec 1980 on a Sunday before Christmas, I travelled westbound over
Woodhead on a diverted 07:40 St.Pancras to Man.Picc. train. The
Class 45 pulling
(with plenty of welly) had taken over the train after an earlier
diversion and reversal at Stenson Jct, south of Derby. On arrival at
Man.Picc., I
remember the loco was named Royal something, which means it was
either "Royal Marines" or "Royal Signals", but which one ? The
coaching stock was
old Mk1
compartment stock, possibly a Bedford commuter rake, not the usual
Midland air-con coaches."

Q. Andrew Pullar asks...
" a} 19/08/1967
Plymouth to Cardiff Central charter train for the Cardiff City
v. Mighty Greens match. I travelled on this aged 8 with my parents in
order to
visit relatives (rather than
watch the 1 all draw). I was informed decades later that the train
was headed by D1057 and was routed by way of St. Philips
Marsh and Dr.
Days curve to avoid running through Bristol Temple Meads. Can anyone
confirm the loco and route? Did it also avoid running through
the
station at Exeter Saint David's?
b) The actual date in
1972 when D19 failed approaching Bristol temple Meads on
1E30 [0820 Plymouth-Leeds] and got rescued by D144.
A long shot perhaps but hope springs eternal."

Q. "Captain Grey" asks...
1)
I vaguely remember going on a Mystex with my Grandmother around 1974 -
76. It started at Derby, went down through Burton and then I
think through Lichfield and we ended up with Llandudno as our final
destination. Anyone else recall this tour? I THINK it was a
47. Any numbers?
2) I travelled on a
school charter from Radcliffe-on-Trent to Wembley Central to see a
England schoolboys international match around
1977-79. We ran via
Nottingham, Market Harborough and the closed freight only line to
Northampton and down the WCML and back the same
way. Anyone
remember anything like this? Again, numbers, dates, anything
appreciated.
