Besides the Summer dated Holiday services, another good bet for ratable
haulage was a relief or additional service. Although on the NE/SW route
these services generally saw Classes 45/6 and 47, this first selection
of photos depicts locos of Classes 20, 31 and 37.
North Wales pt I.

The North Wales Coast became a Mecca for followers of loco hauled
passinger trains during the early 1980s due to the frequent service and
plenty of opportunities to see and ride behind the popular Class 40s.
Diesel drags South of Manchester.

During the 1980's, it was common practice for all loco-hauled passinger
services departing Manchester Piccadilly, on Sundays prior to 1600hrs, to be
diesel powered. These photos show Class 40s at work on such duties.

Not a route that's really well known for its loco hauled trains, but over
the years a surprising number and variety of locos have worked the route,
mostly, but not entirely due dmu failures or shortages.

Scenes showing pairs of Class 25s on the summer Saturday dated trains to
Aberystwyth. This was to be the last summer of the Class 25s on these
workings with Class 37s appearing during 1985.

Shows Class 31s in the Midlands with services to East Anglia during the
period 1983-84. Back then, 31/1s, with or without boilers were still to
be found working alongside the EH fitted 31/4s.
1E22

1E22 was a FO service that ran during the early 1980's from Portsmouth
Harbour to Leeds. Until May 1985, 1E22 was booked for a Class 33 as far
as Birmingham, the only service so booked, while north of Birmingham, 1E22
produced varied type 4 power and many a suprise.
