Is the 1L68 0908 Liverpool LS - Yarmouth that appears on this site's
diary
pages running during the summer of 88
a hauled replacement for the 0950 ex Manchester P, shown in the
TT as Plastic?
Hi all
On Wednesday Feb 8th 1989 I travelled from the Midlands to the
South Coast for a mini bash in France and Belgium.
I caught 1O04 0654 Wolverhampton-Poole from New St to Oxford
with 47478 !!!!. Caught the 0925 Oxford-Pad forward with 50040.
Can anyone tell me what the WTT no was for my records please ?
Many thanks
Phil Bartlett
0925 Ox - Padd was 1F35 according to our

Time: Wed, 26-Dec-2001 22:08:15 GMTWhilst it was not a public passenger train The Royal Train to
Aberystwyth with a pair of DRS choppers must rate as rare ?I once spent a Saturday afternoon (I think) on a pair of choppers
20092/20102,pushing and pulling a class 108 DMU on a Hednesford-
Walsall shuttle after a final drive packed up on the unit. The most unusual passenger operations I were ever on though were
in Austria. The overheads were isolated at a mainline station so
through trains were coasting through with lowered pans. Stopping
trains had a diesel loco shove them out of the station "loose",
with the electric loco raising it's pan under live wires to
accelerate the train away.Branch trains had a diesel pilot to the first reasonable station
to detach. Diesels used were 4 wheel, 0-6-0 and B-B hydraulics.Cheers

Time: Wed, 02-Jan-2002 21:13:45 GMTIn the interest of adding to a debate, I put forward below, a
list of possible contenders.
I can't claim to have seen this lot personally, so if I've got
any details wrong, please feel free to say so here.I've not included Railtour's aimed at the enthusiast, as exotic motive power was
Usually requested for these.Any offers for a Top 10 Railtour's list?
Note that the list that follows in chronological order.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
20th January 1977D1013 0730 Swansea - Leeds
D1013 1443 Leeds - PlymouthMentioned before, but really needs to be included in any
list of contenders. Well off usual Western territory,
all the more remarkable when you consider that;
Only half a dozen class members still in service, and
only a few weeks later they would all be gone.
Bank holiday Monday 29th May 1978
20142+20159+20194+20077 (All working!) 1830 Skegness - Leicester, to Nottingham.
20077+20194 had worked out from Leicester that morning but a fault developed on one of them.
So assistance was summoned for the return. Control sent out the 2nd pair, but by the time they arrived, the fault was fixed, so all four locos worked the return.
Saturday 3rd June 1978
37033+37077 0730 Birmingham NS - Newcastle
Class 37's not unknown on this service, but how often a pair? What would people pay for this today?
Saturday 3rd June 1978.
37283 0900 Llandudno - York
This type extremely rare along the North Wales coast, if not unknown at that time.
Could this be the 1st ever Class 37 on a timetabled north Wales passenger turn?
Interesting to hear just how this loco came to be at Llandudno in the first place!
Saturday 10th June 1978
24082 Llandudno Junction - Euston relief (to 0630 ex Holyhead) throughout!
Only a dozen of this, once 151 strong class left by then, all based at Crewe, but they were enjoying quite a lot of passenger action along the North Wales coast that summer, especially on the
following diagram vice dmu: 0942 Ludo - Man V / 1330 Man V - Ludo / 1642 Ludo - Crewe / 2030 Crewe - Bangor. Class 24's would have worked many passenger duties in and out of Euston during the early 60's
but was this the last ever?
Saturday 14th July 1979
20077+20189 0832 Derby - Yarmouth, to Norwich
20077+20189 Walsall - Yarmouth, forward from NorwichSo far this is the only pair I'm aware of that made it to this popular East Coast resort.
Others known to have reached Norwich (and there must be others?) include;
27/6/81 20170+20192 0830 Stoke (via Derby or Castle Donnington?) - Yarmouth additional
28/8/82 20136+20160 0833 Derby - Yarmouth, but failed on arrival.
Saturday 21st August 1982
73108+73134 1105 Portsmouth - Manchester P, to New Street!
73108+73134 1423 Manchester P - Portsmouth, from New StAgain, another referred to before, but believed to be the 1st ever 73's to reach the West Midlands
on a scheduled passenger service!
Sometime during that summer, (a few weeks before?) a pair worked the 1246 Portsmouth - Leeds. One failed at Oxford while the other reached Banbury before it to, failed. Anyone any ideas on a date?
Saturday 2nd October 1982
40009+40099 1410 Paignton - Manchester P, from Birmingham NS
Pairs of 40's seam to have been far more common that I remember, mostly these reported pairs were in North Wales, So I've gone for this pair, solely due to the fact it's a different route. No doubt there are main more I could have chosen.
1st September 1984
58002+HST 1210 Liverpool LS - Penzance, between Birmingham NS - ?(nr Plymouth)
The 1st example to reach Plymouth. Assisting a failed HST, but, failed itself just a few miles short
Requiring the rear HST power cars to be re-started to assist. Caped at Plymouth?
Friday 7th June 1985
33046 1246 Portsmouth - Leeds throughout.
33046 2100 Bradford - WeymouthAlmost certainly a unique working! Surely the only time a Class 33 reached Leeds or worked out of
Bradford. I'm not clear if the 33 worked through to Weymouth with this
service or if it followed the diagram and took the Leeds - Portsmouth forward from New Street.
It was, however in the West Midlands on Sunday the 9th to work the 0825 Manchester P -
Bristol, from Birmingham NS, replacing 40122.
Thursday 16th January 1986
33115 0625 Poole - Manchester P, from ?
During the early 80's, Class 33's were regular visitors to Manchester P, but always on services ex Cardiff, but never the 33/1's. This sub-class was always rare in the Northwest. This working was also quite remarkable, as
previously, when 33's worked through from the SR, they had usually been replaced in the West Midlands.
Monday 24th June 1987
33055+33062 0625 Poole - Manchester P, from Basingstoke(?)
33055+33062 1615 Liverpool LS - PooleOnly the 2nd time 33's had worked through on this service and a possible 1st working out of Lime St?
26th September 1989
20199+20202 1204 Llandudno - Blaenau Ffestiniog
20199+20202 1418 Blaenau Ffestiniog - LlandudnoCould this be the only time a scheduled passenger train was hauled on this branch by 20's?
The above diagram also included the 0815 Derby - Llandudno -&- 1727 rtn.
Saturday 22nd July 1995
31467+31450 0856 Birmingham NS - Ramsgate
Surely a rare turn at Ramsgate? This turn was to become even more famous, later, due to the fact D9000 worked it almost solidly for an entire summer.
Tuesday 28th January 1997
73132+73139 1420 Brighton - Manchester P, between Redhill - Birmingham New St.
Only the 2nd time Class 73's made it to New Street? Almost 15 years since the 1st pair!
22nd August 1998
58017 09.10 Edinburgh-Bournemouth, from New st
58017 18.14 Bournemouth-Birmingham New Street throughout.Another shortage of 47/8's for Virgin trains forced a long distance run with a 58!
I can also remember a Class 56 (was it 065) was working light along the WCML, sometime late 70's,
When an electric failed on an Inverness(?) train and the 56 dragged it to somewhere like Mossend.
1st ever 56 on a Scottish passenger turn? And then that Crompton worked the beds a couple of
years back, and no doubt loads more.Subject: re: Top 10 rare passenger workings

Time: Sun, 06-Jan-2002 11:30:53 GMTA MASSIVE CONTENDER must be this. There were about ten cranks on board but considering the train you would think there would have been more. As someone else has included stuff from the 90's and
we are talking about the biggest working of alltime, here we go!We left New Street at 0013 on 1S25 for Inverness with 90029 on 30th June 1990. 47461 took over the train at Carstairs and nowt much happened until we got to Carrbridge. We overtook 20902+20905
in the Platform which were also heading to Inverness, one on each end of the weedkiller train. Soon after leaving Carrbridge 47461 slipped to a stand with its 17 coach train. It doesn't take a genius to guess was happened next. The twenties came up the rear and pushed us for about half a mile up the bank until the spa-
hoooon found its - erm - feet! Formation = 47461 = load 17 + 20/9 + load 4 + 3 tanks + 20/9.If anyone knows of anyone else who was on the train, please get in touch with me as I remember someone who took fots from inside the train with the wardrobes on the back.

but sorry on the date ( maybe someone could help with that)
Noticing how little there is for this date in

Do you remember those excellent booklets 'To the last drop' and 'Loco-hauled travel'?
In addition to the details of locomotive diagrams and the likely motive
power to be found working them, many
also featured itineraries for travel.
Did anyone reading this ever attempt to follow one of these itineraries, and if so, how did you fair?

Hello again!!
Here is another date for the "where were you?" sub site of the 1980's timewarp
basher's gen source.
The idea for those who are unfamiliar with this article is to collect
together peoples "moves" for a given date in
order to piece together what loco's worked what services. I wasn't
actually out myself on this date, but there
were a few strange loco changes that seemed to occur around the Sheffield
area, aswell as a class 50 which
came in on the poole Sheffield via Leicester.
Here's what we know so far........

Thanks for your time,
Clayhead.
Is there anyone who can give me the haulage details of 1Z76 1820 Wolverhampton
to Kyle of Lochalsh
"Mid-Kylesman" on 2 June 1979 . I know it is slightly earlier than
the time warp period.
I can remember some of the details 40012 to Carlisle via Leeds and
the 20s and 26s but the rest is a blur.
I also have a record of 40112 from Bristol Tm to Birmingham NS in Aug
1980 but find conflicting info in the
diary pages.15 Aug if I remember correctly.(Last move of a WR Rover)
Thanks for a great site
Hi readers,
We've recieved a photo of 56066 at BNS with a failed x/c on 14/08/82, which
it rescued from Leamington.Working unknown. Both locos came off at New
St. Does any one know what it
worked?. Adjacent to the 56's in the photo is what looks like 31207
which we know to have worked:-
31207 1M67 1050 Yarmouth - Birmingham NS, from Norwich
perhaps this will help..
The photo should appear on our site next saturday when we next update.....
Thanks for your time.........
